Niger ready for Zone 3 African Nations Championship
Niamey, Niger, October 9, 2012- Niger's men's and women's volleyball teams are ready to participate in the 17th edition of the Zone 3 African Nations Championships being held in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, October 12 to 21.
The annual competition for West African countries was originally scheduled October 5 to 14. It was postponed to the new dates to allow the delegations from Benin, Togo and Ghana to arrive by road across the borders.
The Niger Volleyball Federation, FENIVOLLEY, did their best in the last few weeks to prepare the teams for the solidarity tournament that gathers nine countries.
The President of FENIVOLLEY, Issouf Badar, expressed his gratitude to those people who helped the teams prepare technically and financially and provided complete equipment for the men's and women's selections ahead of the event. Niger teams are now fully ready to compete for the title.
“Indeed, the investment policy of the major players in clubs outside Niger is very important as the selected squad includes five professionals; three of them play in Algeria, one in Senegal and another in Burkina Faso, said Badar. "Those professionals will reinforce the group of local players, mainly from the USGN, who won the last Cup of Clubs Zone 3 Championship in Niamey.”
The selection came at the end of eight weeks of intensive preparation and showed determination to win the Zone 3 title.
For the women's team, the coach injected new blood from training centres all over the country, including Niamey’s Dosso and Doutchi. The new-look team is now composed of more than 90 per cent young players taking part in their first major competition.
