Brazil, Dominican Republic and Peru stay undefeated

Lima, Peru, September 4, 2012 – Brazil, Dominican Republic and hosts Peru remained undefeated after two days of action in the U-23 Women’s Pan American Volleyball Cup taking place at Miguel Grau Coliseum of El Callao in Lima, the Peruvian capital.

In Tuesday’s matches, Brazil defeated Argentina, Dominican Republic blasted Costa Rica while Peru overcame Canada. In the other match of the day, Cuba defeated Colombia to put their record at 1-1.

Cuba 3, Colombia 0
Cuba dispatched Colombia in straight sets (25-18, 25-17, 25-21) to even up at 1-1 their win-loss record in Pool A while the losers dropped to 0-2. The winners held advantages in attacks (37-21) and service aces (9-2) while the defeated side held slim margin of 9-8 in blocks. Yaremi Mendaro had 13 points to lead the balanced offense of Cuba, followed by Yoana Palacio and Sulian Matienzo with 12 and 11 respectively. Alena Rojas and Daymara Lescay each contributed 8 tallies. Colombia’s Silvia Galeano finished with 8 points and Melissa Rangel had 7, including four blocks.

Brazil 3, Argentina 0
Brazil subdued Argentina 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 26-24) in a classic South American duel. Brazil improved their win-loss record to 2-0 and Argentina fell to 1-1 as both teams were coming off victories in the opening day in Pool A. The winners held a commanding offensive margin with a 42-30 advantage in kills and produced an 8-3 difference in blocks. Both teams scored six service winners. Gabriela Braga Guimaraes and Rosamaria Montibeller topped Brazil with 18 and 16 points respectively and both players had 1 block and 2 aces. Argentina’s Lucia Fresco was the only player of her side with double figures in the scoring charts finishing with 18 points, including two blocks.

Dominican Republic 3, Costa Rica 0
Dominican Republic hammered Costa Rica 3-0 (25-6, 25-8, 25-17) to claim their second victory in as many outings in Pool B. The defeated side fell to a 0-2 record. The winners’ defense at the net produced an 8-1 advantage in blocks and they also had the same margin of 8-1 in serving aces. The Dominicans held an overwhelming gap of 36-10 in attacks. Yonkaira Peña spearheaded the Dominicans with 14 points, followed by Gaila Gonzalez and Candida Arias with 9 and 7 points respectively.

Peru 3, Canada 1
Peru defeated Canada in four sets (25-15, 21-25, 26-24, 25-22) for their second triumph in two outings. Canada dropped to a 0-2 record in Pool B. The home side took advantage of 40 unforced errors made by the Canadians while making 26. The winners were better from the service line 10-6 but the defeated side held a 17-7 margin in the blocking category. Angela Leyva led four Peruvians with double digits in the score charts with 14 points. Ginna Lopez and Karla Ortiz tallied 11 apiece while Clarivet Yllescas added 10 points. Canada’s Royale Richardson and Sophie Carpentier each finished with 15 points while Amy Leschied and Alicia Perrin had 8 points apiece.
