Puerto Rico and Mexico Joins USA and Canada into Semis

Colorado Springs, USA, August 30, 2012 - Puerto Rico and Mexico won quarterfinal matches Thursday to advance to the NORCECA Men’s Junior Continental Championship semifinal round at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Friday’s first semifinal will have Pool B winner Canada facing Mexico at 15:00, followed by Pool A winner United States against Puerto Rico at 17:30. The Classification 5-8 matches start with Guatemala challenging St. Vincent and the Grenadines at 11:00, followed by Honduras against Curacao at 13:00.
Puerto Rico 3, Honduras 0
Puerto Rico recovered from its first loss with a 25-16, 25-16, 25-11 victory over Honduras in the quarterfinal round. The winners advanced to the semifinals, while Honduras falls into the classification 5-8 round starting on Friday. Puerto Rico was led by its captain Cristian Rivera, who totaled 11 points with four blocks in two sets of action. Giovanni Llinas charted nine points in the victory. Honduras was paced by Frank Alley’s 10 points and teammate Jose Vasquez contributed six points. Puerto Rico won the battle at the net with a 10-4 margin and 44-23 kill advantage. In addition, they out-served Honduras with a 6-0 advantage.
Mexico 3, Guatemala 0
Mexico turned back Guatemala 25-23, 25-17, 25-23 in the quarterfinals. The Mexicans will now face Pool B winner Canada on Friday while Guatemala will face St. Vincent and the Grenadines in a classification 5-8 match. Mexico had four players score in double-digit points led by Jesus Alberto Perales’ 14 points. Roberto Rincon and Sergio Perez added 12 points, followed by Jose Martinez with 11 points. Gerardo Antonio Gonzalez led Guatemala with a match-high 24 points, while Elser Emanuel Franco De Paz added seven points. Mexico held a 12-4 margin in blocks and a slim 3-1 ace advantage.
