Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, July 14, 2012 – Defending champions Brazil, Cuba and Dominican Republic remained undefeated after three days of actions in the XI Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup.
In Saturday’s activity, Brazil and Dominican Republic won their respective matches in straight sets over Trinidad & Tobago and Puerto Rico respectively while Cuba needed four frames to dispatch United States.
Pool A
Dominican Republic 3, Puerto Rico 0 Dominican Republic defeated Puerto Rico in straight sets (25-22, 25-19, 25-22) to claim their third victory. The winners held advantages of 13-4 and 5-3 in blocks and aces. Prisilla Rivera and Gina Mambru charted 14 and 12 points to lead the winners while Brayelin Martinez and Annerys Vargas added 9 and 8 with three blocks apiece. Puerto Rico’s Yarimar Rosa finished with 12 points.
Canada 3, Colombia 0 Canada claimed their first victory by defeating Colombia 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-13). Sarah Pavan had a match-high 17 points and Jaimie Thibeault scored 11 for Canada, while Colombia’s Diana Arrechea finished with 11 points.
Cuba 3, United States 1 Cuba remained undefeated in three outings following their 3-1 (25-18, 25-23, 18-25, 25-19) victory over United States. The Americans dropped to a 2-1 win-loss record. Ana Cleger’s 17 points, including five blocks, led Cuba. She was followed by Wilma Salas with 13 and Gyselle Silva and Yanelis Santos with 12 apiece. USA’s Kristin Richards had a match-high 20 points and Nicole Fawcett came off the bench to collect 15.

Brazil 3, Trinidad & Tobago 0 Brazil swept Trinidad and Tobago 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-20) to claim their third triumph in as many outings. The winners held a 6-2 margin in aces and had a slight edge in blocks 10-9. Gabriela Braga and Andressa Picussa each recorded 11 points for the winning side while Joyce Silva added 8.
Peru 3, Costa Rica 0 Peru blanked Costa Rica 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-15) for their second victory against one loss and Costa Rica are now 1-2. The Peruvian side whitewashed their opponents 7-0 in the aces category and dominated 10-5 in blocks. Daniela Uribe was the leading scorer of Peru with 19 points, followed by Carla Rueda with 11 tallies and Clarivett Yllescas and Mirtha Uribe each with 10 points. Costa Rica’s Verania Willis finished with 12.
Argentina 3, Mexico 0 Argentina improved their win-loss record to 2-1 by defeating hosts Mexico 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-21). The home team fell to 0-3. Argentina outblocked the opponents 11-5 and also won 4-0 the battle from the service line. Natasha Busquets and Georgina Pinedo led Argentina with 14 and 10 points respectively while Lucia Fresco chipped in 9 points. Mexico’s Alejandra Isiordia finished with 13 points and Lizbeth Sainz added 8.
