FIVB study published in British Journal of Sports Medicine

The Heat Stress Monitoring Program was carried out from 2009 to 2011
Lausanne, Switzerland, June 26, 2012 - Results from the FIVB’s Heat Stress Monitoring Program, which highlighted the need for new guidelines to be implemented to help manage the effects of heat on elite athletes, have been published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

The report was carried out by FIVB Medical Commission President Dr Roald Bahr alongside the winner of the first FIVB Sports Science Award, Dr Jonathan Reeser.

Cases of heat-related medical forfeits on the FIVB Beach Volleyball SWATCH World Tour were monitored as part of the program across the 2009, 2010 and 2011 editions of the circuit

As a result, it was concluded that despite incidence of significant heat illness among athletes competing on the World Tour being quite low, the guidelines currently available need to be adapted if they are to fully assess the risk of heat stress.
