Sada Cruzeiro wins Superliga crown

Sada Cruzeiro's victory made up for their loss in the Superliga final last year
São Bernardo do Campo, Brazil, April 23, 2012 – Sada Cruzeiro etched their name into Brazilian volleyball’s history books on Saturday after they saw off Vôlei Futuro 3-1 (24-26, 25-18, 25-13, 25-19) to claim the 2011/12 Superliga title.

The win makes up for their agonizing loss in last year’s final to Sesi-SP.

“Superliga is growing each year. It was created passion,” FIVB executive vice-president and Brazilian Volleyball Federation president Dr Ary Graça said. “Volleyball is a sport of the family in Brazil.”

Wing spiker Mauricio Silva put on a stunning display for Sada Cruzeiro in the final, leading the scores with 20 points while setter William Arjona picked up the best player of the match award.

“Today I am a more experienced player,” Mauricio said. “Sada Cruzeiro gave the opportunity of helping the team to win the title. Now I know that I have to get better each year because we have the best national championship in the world.”

Setter and captain William Arjona was really happy with the title. “We know our qualities and our effort each day and this year we were crowned,” William explained. “In sport on a day we win and on another we lose. We lost in the final last year but we won this season. The life of an athlete is like this. We have to learn more with the defeat than with the victory.”

Sada Cruzeiro also took the prizes of best setter (William), best receiver (Filipe), best digger (Serginho), best attack (Wallace). Middle blocker Vini, of Vôlei Futuro, was elected the best server and the middle blocker Gustavão, of Medley/Campinas, the best blocker.
