Sofia confirmed as host of 2012 World League Finals

Bulgarian fans will have plenty to cheer about in 2012

Lausanne, Switzerland, July 5, 2011 – Sofia will host their first FIVB Volleyball World League Final Round in 2012 after it was announced that the Bulgarian capital city will welcome the world’s top volleyball men’s teams just months before the London 2012 Olympic Games.

It will be the 23rd edition of the competition and the first time the final stages of the world’s premier annual men’s tournament will be held in the Eastern European country.

“The FIVB Volleyball World League is all about continuing the growth of volleyball around the world, so Bulgaria was a natural choice, especially considering their standing in the game,” FIVB Volleyball World League Council President and FIVB Board of Administration member Mr Francesco Franchi said. “Bulgaria has consistently shown it is at the top end of the sport and its fans have always been passionate so we expect a magical atmosphere when eight of the world’s best sides convene in Sofia next June and July.”

The 2012 FIVB Volleyball World League will take place from May 25 to July 1.

“We have no doubt that the National Volleyball Federation of Bulgaria will put on a spectacular show in this, one of the most important World Leagues in the lead up to the London 2012 Olympic Games,” Mr Franchi added. “The country has great potential and this can help them on their way to developing further into a proud sporting nation.”

With the decision, Bulgaria is now the first side to be confirmed for next year’s Final Round, which will be held in a new 16,000 capacity venue. Bulgaria is currently competing in Gdansk, Poland in this year’s Final Round and are grouped in Pool E alongside the hosts, Italy and Argentina.
