FIVB announces Match of the Week schedule for World League
The specially selected “Match of the Week†is available to the World League’s host broadcasters as well as other TV channels and was launched three years ago as part of the FIVB’s initiative to further spread volleyball into regions where the sport has the potential to grow. The first Match of the Week will be Poland’s clash at home against USA on Saturday, set to take place at 15:00 GMT in Lodz. The two sides have met on 18 occasions in FIVB competition, with Poland having the edge with 10 wins. The last time the two teams played was during the Final Round of the 2008 World League with USA picking up a narrow 3-2 (25-18, 23-25, 27-25, 18-25, 16-14) victory. Week two will feature Serbia’s home match against Finland in Belgrade in Pool C on June 4 at 18:00 with week three also featuring Finland, this time against 2010 Final Round hosts Argentina in Lahti on June 11 at 16:00. On week four fans will be able to watch one of the biggest rivalries in volleyball as Italy host France in Catania on June 18 at 18:30 in Pool D while week five will see Germany take on Russia in Pool B on June 24 in Berlin at 17:30. Week six will feature Poland again, this time taking on defending champions Brazil in Katowice on June 30 at 18:30 in what could be a deciding match in Pool A. All times are in GMT Last year’s “Match of the Week†was broadcast by a total number of 20 international broadcasters across 55 territories on five continents with Week six’s match between Serbia and Italy being the most popular with a potential viewing figure of almost 269 million people. The FIVB Volleyball World League is set to run from May 27 to July 10 with the Final Round taking place in Gdansk-Sopot, Poland.
