For 37 years, Germany tried to realise their dream of participating in the Olympics. They finally got there in 2008 after an emotional roller coaster ride, inspirational appearances and a bit of luck. In Beijing, Germany played well but lacked stability, eventually finishing ninth and parting company with coach Stelian Moculescu, who had already announced his retirement, During Moculescu's term, Germany became a world-class side, finishing ninth in the 2006 FIVB World Championship and fifth in the European Championship. The former international player always said that the development of a team needed one or two Olympic cycles.
Former Poland coach Raúl Lozano took over and in his first year celebrated excellent results. After his team won the 2009 European League, they qualified for the 2010 World Championships and the 2010 World League. Sixth place at the European Championships in 2009 was also a positive result (being defeated only by the finalists: Poland and France).
Germany finished 11th in the 2011 World League before registering a 15th place finish at the 2011 European Championships. They come to the 23rd edition of the competition with a new coach in Vital Heynen |
