Cuba saw off hosts Korea 3-2 (23-25, 27-25, 25-18,
23-25, 15-11) in Busan while both matches in Lodz, Poland were decided by
tie-breakers, with the home side beating Serbia 3-2 (24-26, 25-22, 20-20,
25-16, 15-10) and world No.2 Brazil edging 2011 FIVB Volleyball World Cup
winners Italy in five sets (18-25, 25-22, 25-21, 20-25, 15-6).
Meanwhile Turkey beat Japan 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-21) in Busan’s remaining
fixture, while both matches in Macua, China ended in straight sets with the
hosts beating Puerto Rico (25-15, 25-19, 25-16) and Thailand seeing off
Argentina (25-18, 25-9, 25-22)
In Santo Domingo, two-time defending champions USA defeated Germany 3-1 (25-17, 25-15, 23-25, 25-11) while hosts Dominican Republic won 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-18) over Chinese Taipei.
"I’m a little disappointed because of the result
and because our girls tried to do their best,” a frustrated Marco Bracci, Italy
coach said. “It’s obvious that in this part of the season all the teams can’t
show all their skills, physical condition of the players is not the best. But
we will continue to grow up an next games will be even better."
