Team profile

Germany are currently in the middle of a form resurgence - 2010 and 2011 World Grand Prix results aside. After finishing 11th at the 2006 FIVB World Championship in Japan, Germany successfully qualified for the 2008 and 2009 FIVB World Grand Prix (after missing out in 2006 and 2007). They failed to reach the 2008 Beijing Olympics after a loss to world champions Russia but since that disappointment the team has improved.

In 2009, Germany managed their best finish at the FIVB World Grand Prix since 2002 by claiming the bronze medal. They also reached the semifinals at the European Championship but were unable to finish on the podium. The side slipped to 15th in the world rankings following a disappointing 2010 FIVB World Grand Prix, but climbed back to 10th place after finishing the year well by coming seventh at the FIVB Women’s World Championship.

After a disappointing 2-7 record in last year’s FIVB World Grand Prix, the German team responded with a fine performance in the European Championship beating titleholders Italy 3-0 in the semifinals, but falling to Serbia in the final. They then finished sixth at the FIVB World Cup.
Coach profile

Giovanni Guidetti is an old hand in the coaching business having started at 23 with Italian second division club Spezzano in 1995. From 1997 to 2000 he worked as an assistant for the Italian women’s team whilst coaching the Italy junior team before heading to USA for a short stint. In 2002 he was in charge of the Bulgarian women’s team for a year. Since 2006 he has coached Germany, leading them to some very credible results. He also coached Turkish club Istanbul to second place at the recent FIVB Club World Championships.
