We struggled in the first two sets: USA coach

The USA coaching staff (right) meet with their Dominican Republic counterparts ahead of their match on Friday
USA coach Hugh McCutcheon: I'm obviously happy with the win. I thought our team struggled in the first two sets at different times, but to the athletes' credit, they were able to find ways to win and make big plays at big moments.

(Re. Logan Tom, who didn't play last week): She didn't play last weekend. We want to develop some younger outside hitters and thankfully they played well. Megan Hodge came in today and had a big impact. Logan is a big part of our team. She got off the plane on Wednesday and I'm sure she was jetlagged, but she did lots of little things today to make our team successful. And she also works hard to make those around her better players; that's very valuable for us.

USA captain Jennifer Tamas: I think we had a slow start in the first game, but I'm happy with the way we finished. We know the Dominicans have a strong offensive team, so we tried to serve good and set up good blocking, and did that well as the game went on.

USA No. 16 Foluke Akinradewo: I think any time we step on court against a NORCECA team it's important that we beat them. We had a slow start but in the end got into our rhythm and finished well.

(Happy to be back in Japan?) It's always nice to come back to Japan. I had a great six months here with my club team [Toyota Auto Body Queenseis]. I'm a little nostalgic, but after this match I could see some of my teammates so it was great.

Dominican Republic coach Marcos Kwiek: Congratulations to the U.S. team for their win. In the first two sets, we concentrated and played well, but toward the end our attacks were blocked and our tosses weren't good enough, so things didn't go well. In the third set we lost concentration and then the U.S. took the game. Of course, the Americans' blocking was excellent.

Dominican Republic captain Milagros Cabral: Congratulations to the American team. The U.S. Defense was very good against our attacks, so they had the advantage today. We are trying our best and looking forward to tomorrow's game. Our strong point is our attack, but during this series I don't think we showed our real strength.
