Seven teams secure berths to quarterfinals of African Club champs


Tunisia's Etoile attack Bou Arririj but the hosts eventually go down to the Algerian outfit in a five-set thriller

Tunisia, April 24, 2012 - Seven teams secured their ticket to the quarterfinals of the 2012 Men’s African Club Championship on Tuesday after the fourth day of the pool stage drew to a close in Sousse, Tunisia.

Defending champions Al Ahly, compatriots Zamalek and Guish, hosts Etoile du Sahel, Esperance from Tunisia, and the two Algerian teams Bejaia and Bourj Bou Arririj all progressed with just one place remaining.

The fourth day featured a stunning victory for Bourj Bou Arririj in Pool A as they held off home club Etoile du Sahel in the competition’s first five-set match (25-20, 17-25, 18-25, 25-15, 15-12) in front of 2,000 spectators. Despite the result both side’s sealed their place in the final eight.

Defending champions Al Ahly continued their winning streak with a fourth straight victory, a 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-15) win over APR of Rwanda confirming their place in the quarterfinals.

Esperance of Tunisia improved their win-loss record to 3-1 after sealing a victory over Inter of Congo Brazzaville, needing just three sets (25-7, 25-18, 25-12) to secure second place in Pool B.

Zamalek took the number of their tournament wins up to three, a 3-0 (26-25, 25-19, 29-27) win over Libya’s Ahly Tripoli Libya making them the only team besides Al Ahly and Bejaia to not drop a set during the preliminary round.

The competition will continue on Wednesday with day five featuring nine matches across the four preliminary pools.

Pool A
Borj Bouaririj of Algeria surprised the home fans with a stunning marathon win over hosts Etoile du Sahel in over two hours’ worth of volleyball thrills and spills. The Algerian team improved their win-loss ratio to 3-0 while Etoile dropped to 1-3 but both teams secured a quarterfinal ticket from Pool A.

Sun Shine of Nigeria picked up their first win of the tournament, beating Madagascar’s AS Vaora 3-0 (25-18, 25-28, 25-22) to improve to 1-2 leaving Voara at the bottom of the Pool with 0-3

Pool B
Al Ahly continued their winning streak with a fourth win against APR. Ahly lead the pool with four wins and no defeats while APR are in fourth with a 2-2 win-loss record.

Esperance of Tunisia rebounded after their setback against Ahly on Tuesday to beat Inter of Congo Brazzaville 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-12). The victory put Esperance second in the group while Inter are bottom and yet to notch up their first win.

GSU of Kenya continued their steady performance to see off Angola’s Agosto 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 32-30). GSU are now third in the pool with 3-1 while Agosto dropped to 0-4.

Pool C
Zamalek used all 12 of their players as they disposed of struggling Ahly Tripoli, although the Libyan outfit improved their performance in an exciting third set.

Kenya Prisons hammered Omni Sport of Cotê d’Ivoire 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-17) in a one-sided game that allowed Prisons to keep their hopes of a quarterfinal berth alive.

Pool D
FAP used their strong services to sweep Manga of Gabon aside 3-0 (25-18, 2-15, 25-21) in a match which saw the Cameroon club’s performance improve on the previous day’s outing.

El Guish of Egypt carried their momentum forward to trounce Mwangaza of Congo RD 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-14).

Guish progressed to 3-0 while Mwangaza dropped to 0-3.
