FIVB Volleyball Club World Championships 2012

Al Rayyan captain disappointed about the loss

Players of Sada Cruzeiro celebrate their ticket to the quarterfinals at the FIVB Club World Championship

Osman Ajab, captain of Al Rayyan: “We are disappointed, very disappointed because of the refereeing mistakes, especially in the last point of the fourth and final set which made us to lose the match. If I had the possibility to challenge, I would have done it. We played a good match but again lost. I feel sorry for our fans and we would like to play a good game in our last match although it is obvious that we will not qualify for the second round. We owe this to our supporters as the host team. Our coach did a very good job by making our team with many new players, play as a team in a very short time and we will try to show this again in the last match of the group.

On the possibility the defeat was due to tiredness after the first match against Trentino, and not only because of the refereeing errors:

“There are a few factors for the loss but the tiredness was not one of them, but the referees’ errors are.

William Arjona, captain of Sada Cruzeiro: It was a very tough match against a strong team of Al Rayyan with excellent players. That is why winning this match makes us very happy, in addition to the fact that it qualifies us for the semi-finals.

Asked to comment on that point at the end of the match:

I don’t think that was the key for the match, since it was hard to make a definite decision, but it is a fact that we played a very good match.

Igor Arbutina, coach of Al Rayyan: “First of all, I would like to congratulate the Sada Cruzeiro team for their excellent match today. As for Al Rayyan, we played another very good match but we also lost it. My players started with a lot of tension, because they knew they had the possibility of qualifying if they win, and when you are nervous and too tense you may commit a lot of mistakes that normally can easily avoid. This is what happened, we had very good periods, but we committed mistakes in playing crucial points. We are looking forward the next match to end our participation on a positive performance because the Al Rayyan supporters deserve this.

On his thoughts about the controversial point at the end of the match

“I don’t like to get into the details of refereeing. What I can say is that there are some points which could change the outcome of a match, and it is a fact that in today’s match as well as in the one against Trentino, there were two decisions for points which cost us the loss of a set and even a match.”

Marcelo Mendez, coach of Sada Cruzeiro: “I would like also to congratulate the Al Rayyan team for the very good match they played today. We are happy to have managed winning this game and securing our place in the second round. It was a tough match but we were able in the crucial periods to raise our game and win the important points. We are glad to qualify for the semi-finals of this great tournament.
