The first volleyball team in Zamalek was started in September 1952. At
that time they were headed by Mr. Osman Shahatah Hamid.
The team started participating in domestic competition in 1953. The club
have been in the First Level Division - Local League for over three decades,
and have emerged as winners 13 times since 1979. Internationally, Zamalek have
won the African championship six times (1983, 1986, 1989, 1990, 2009 and 2012).
They have also won the Arab championship twice, in 1986 and 1988.
Captain Mahmoud Faranoni was the force behind the establishment of the Zamalek
Club volleyball team. He was one of the most distinguished coaches in the world,
and coached Team Canada in addition to setting up the club’s volleyball team.
Faranoni was succeeded by Captian Nabile Kotb, a talented and
distinguished player and a superstar in this time, then Captain Ahmed Elgamal from
1962 to 1983. Elgamal was also the Egyptian national team coach.
The current coach is Mr.
Mohamed Ellakany.
