Reviewing the FIVB Men's Club Volleyball Championship


Trentino Diatec won the FIVB Volleyball Men's Volleyball Club World Championship by defeating Jastrzebski Wegiel

Doha, Qatar, October 14, 2011 – Trentino Diatec Trento won the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship after defeating Trentino KS Jastrzebski Wegiel in the title match on Friday in Doha, Qatar. In bronze medal match, Zenit Kazan gained the podium spot following their win over Sesi Sao Paulo.

Trentino Diatec Trento 3, KS Jastrzebski Wegiel 1 (Men’s Gold Medal)
Trentino Diatec Trento recovered from a first set loss in winning the 2011 FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship with a 29-31, 25-16, 25-11, 25-16 victory over KS Jastrzebski Wegiel on Friday evening in Doha, Qatar.

Trentino Diatec has now won three consecutive FIVB Men’s Club World Championships, including 15 straight matches in the event since 2009. All three championships have been won in Doha. Six Trentino Diatec players – Matey Kaziyski, Osmany Juantorena, Tsvetan Sokolov, Lukasz Sygadio, Andrea Bari and Raphael Vieira de Olivieira – have been a part of all three titles, while Jan Stokr, Massimo Colaci and Dore Delle Lunge were part of last year’s championship as well.

An Italian club has won all seven FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club Championships, while a Polish club has been the runner-up in the event the past three championships.

Jan Stokr scored a match-high contributed 21 points for Trentino Diatec, while the team’s captain Matey Kaziyski sparked the Italian club with 20 additional points. Osmany Juantorena recorded 15 points in the victory for Trentino Diatec. Jastrzebski Wegiel’s Michal Lasko charted 19 points and Michal Kubiak added 12 points. Trentino Diatec capitalized on their block with a 14-3 advantage over Jastrzebski Wegiel, Further, Trentino Diatec held a 5-2 margin in aces.

“It was an incredible final,” said Kaziyski, the captain for Trentino Diatec. “Both teams played on very high level. The first set was a little difficult for us, but we realised we were really close and that if we would push just a little more we would be able to win the match. And we did! We have participated in this championship for several years now, and we are looking forward to return next year.”

“Unfortunately we weren't able to win this final, but we've have shown some real quality volleyball in the two matches before,” Jastrzebski Wegiel coach Lorenzo Bernardi said. “We've won against Zenit Kazan and Sesi Sao Paulo, which are two of the biggest teams in the world. So I think we can be very happy with our team's performance in this championship.”

Zenit Kazan 3, Sesi Sao Paulo 1 (Men’s Bronze Medal)
Zenit Kazan finished the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship with the bronze medal after defeating Sesi Sao Paulo 19-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-23 Friday afternoon in Doha, Qatar.  Zenit Kazan also won the bronze medal in the 2009 event.

Zenit Kazan was paced by Maxim Mikhaylov’s 20 points, followed by Alexander Volkov’s 11 points. Alexey Obmochaev notched 19 digs and 15 excellent receptions for Zenit Kazan. Murilo Endres led Sesi Sao Paulo with 23 points, while Wallace Martins contributed 13 points.

Zenit Kazan held a 13-5 block advantage, while Sesi Sao Paulo produced a 6-2 margin in aces. Sesi Sao Paulo committed 28 errors to Zenit Kazan’s 21. Sesi Sao Paulo managed a 58-51 margin in attack points.

“I'm not satisfied with the third position, but I'm happy with today's victory so we can take home the bronze medal,” Zenit Kazan coach Vladimr Alekno said “After all we have beaten one the biggest teams in the world. My players played very well today and they were determined to win. By facing some of the biggest teams in the world, we have gained a lot of experience from this competition.”

“We would like to congratulate the Russians with today's victory and the bronze medal,” Sesi Sao Paulo coach Giovane Gavio said. “I would also like to congratulate the organising committee with this wonderful championship. We gained a lot of experience this week and will benifit from it in the future. Yesterday's defeat had affected us negatively, but we shouldn't forget that we played against two of the best teams in the world.”
