Trentino Diatec win third straight FIVB World Club Championship gold medal


Trentino Diatec Trento won the FIVB Volleyball Men's Club World Championship for the third year in a row

Doha, Qatar, October 14, 2011 – Trentino Diatec Trento recovered from a first set loss in winning the 2011 FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship with a 29-31, 25-16, 25-11, 25-16 victory over KS Jastrzebski Wegiel on Friday evening in Doha, Qatar.

Trentino Diatec has now won three consecutive FIVB Men’s Club World Championships, including 15 straight matches in the event since 2009. All three championships have been won in Doha. Six Trentino Diatec players – Matey Kaziyski, Osmany Juantorena, Tsvetan Sokolov, Lukasz Sygadio, Andrea Bari and Raphael Vieira de Olivieira – have been a part of all three titles, while Jan Stokr, Massimo Colaci and Dore Delle Lunge were part of last year’s championship as well.

An Italian club has won all seven FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club Championships, while a Polish club has been the runner-up in the event the past three championships.

Jan Stokr scored a match-high contributed 21 points for Trentino Diatec, while the team’s captain Matey Kaziyski sparked the Italian club with 20 additional points. Osmany Juantorena recorded 15 points in the victory for Trentino Diatec. Jastrzebski Wegiel’s Michal Lasko charted 19 points and Michal Kubiak added 12 points.

Trentino Diatec capitalized on their block with a 14-3 advantage over Jastrzebski Wegiel, Further, Trentino Diatec held a 5-2 margin in aces.

Trentino Diatec took an 8-6 lead into the opening set’s first technical timeout on a Jan Stokr block for the first two-point cushion of the set. Jastrzebski Wegiel scored the first two points after the break to quickly tie the set at 8-all. However, Trentino Diatec returned to a two-point edge after a Jastrzebski Wegiel attack error. Raphael Margarido served an ace to place Jastrzebski Wegiel in front 12-11. Russell Holmes blocked back a Trentino Diatec attack and Michal Lasko hit off the block to increase Jastrzebski Wegiel’s lead to 15-12. Trentino Diatec closed to within one at 19-18 on a Matey Kaziyski attack, then he knotted the score with an attack at 19-all. Stok placed Trentino Diatec in front 20-19 with the team’s fourth consecutive point. The teams traded points when Trentino Diatec reached set point first at 24-23. Jastrzebski Wegiel saved four set points before taking a 28-27 lead on a Lasko spike. Michal Kubiak ended the set 31-29 with Jastrzebski Wegiel’s third set-point opportunity with an attack off the block. Lasko ended the set with nine points offsetting the seven points scored by Kaziski and Stokr.

Trentino Diactec took a 6-4 lead in the second set on Mitar Tzourtis’ ace. The teams traded points until Trentino Diatec added to their lead at 12-9 following a Jastrzebski attack error. Tzourits scored an attack and block out of a Jastrzebski timeout, then Kaziyski added an ace to send the score to 15-9. Trentino Diatec went into the second technical timeout on a 6-0 run and leading 16-9. Osmany Juantorena hammered an overpass to extend the gap to 18-10. Trentino Diatec ended the set at 25-16 on their fourth ace of the set. Kaziyski tallied six points in the second set a Trentino Diatec converted 13 of 20 attacks.

Trentino Diatec notched the opening two points of the third set. Emanuele Birarelli extended the gap to three points at 7-4 on a block. Out of the technical timeout, Birarelli added another block and Jastrzebski Wegiel hit wide to increase the lead to 10-5. Zbigniew Bartman hit a back-row attack to narrow the deficit to 10-8, but Stokr pounded an attack and Birarelli down another point to build back a five-point edge at 13-8. Kaziyski hit two attack winners for his team’s fifth straight point at 15-8. Juantorena served an ace into the second technical timeout for a 16-8 advantage. Out of the break Jastrzebski Wegiel hit wide leading a quick timeout down 17-8. Trentino Diatec closed out the set 25-11 on a service error.

Kaziyski presented Trentino Diatec a 4-2 advantage in the fourth set. Trentino Diatec went into the first technical timeout with an 8-5 advantage following a Juantorena attack. Stokr spiked an attack through the defense and Tzourits put up a block to increase the Trentino Diatec advantage to 14-9. Stokr added a block and Jastrzebski Wegiel attacked into the net to produce a Trentino Diatec 16-9 lead at the second technical timeout. Trentino Diatec continued their momentum into a Jastrzebski Wegiel timeout with an 18-10 advantage. Trentino Diatec finished the set and match at 25-16 on a Tzourtis spike.
