Trentino Diatec one win from third FIVB Men's Club World Championship


Jastrzebski Wegiel will attempt to snap Trentino Diatec's 14-match win streak in the FIVB Men's Club World Championship on Friday in the gold-medal match

Doha, Qatar, October 13, 2011 – KS Jastrzebski Wegiel and Trentino Diatec Trento won FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship semifinal matches on Thursday to advance to Friday’s gold-medal match.

Jastrzebski Wegiel and Trentino Diatec Trento will play for the gold medal on Friday at 7 p.m., while Sesi Sao Paulo and Zenit Kazan will attempt to rebound and win the bronze medal at 3 p.m. in the men’s competition.

Trentino Diatec Trento, which is looking to win their third consecutive FIVB Men's Club World Championship is led in scoring by captain Matey Kaziyski's 52 points for fifth place, followed by Osmany Juantorena's 50 points for sixth place. Kaziyski holds a tournament-best 58.7 spike percent, while Juantorena is atop the Best Spiker list with a 56.0 success percent. Kaziyski also ranks first in Best Server with a 0.50 average per set, while Emanuele Birarelli ranks third with 0.43 per set. Andrea Bari is the second-leading digger with a 3.29 average and is second in Best Libero with a 6.43 average per set.

Jastrzebski Wegiel is led by Michal Lasko and his 72 points through pool play, good for second place overall in the tournament. The Polish club's captain Zbigniew Bartman ranks seventh in the tournament in scoring and sixth in Best Spiker with a 46.1 success percent, while Russell Holmes ranks first in Best Blocker with 0.81 blocks per set. Pawel Rusek is leading the Best Receiver category with a 71.9 efficiency percent and the Best Libero category with a 6.69 average per set.

Wallace Martins paces Sesi Sao Paulo with 67 points for third-place overall in scoring, while teammate Murilo Endres ranks fourth in scoring with 54 points. Martins is second in Best Spiker with a 54.6 success percent. Sidnei dos Santos Junior holds a 0.63 block average for second place and is the seventh-best server with 0.31 aces per set. Sandro Barbalho is second in Best Setter with 6.06 running sets average, and Sergio Santos is third in Best Receiver at 66.3 efficiency percent.

Zenit Kazan is led by Maxim Mikhaylov and his tournament-leading 80 points. He also ranks fourth in Best Spiker with a 50.75 success percent and second in Best Server with a 0.47 ace average. William ‘Reid’ Priddy ranks third in Best Blocker with 0.60 per set. Zenit Kazan has the two of the top three two diggers in the tournament with Alexey Obmochaev leading at 3.47 digs per set and Valerio Vermiglio ranking third at 3.07. Interestingly, Vermiglio also ranks atop the Best Setter with 6.27 running sets average to supplement his digging prowess.

Jastrzebski 3, Sesi Sao Paulo 2
Jastrzebski Wegiel rallied from a 2-1 set deficit and 9-6 down in the fifth set to win a thrilling five-set match over Sesi Sao Paulo with scores of 25-23, 18-25, 19-25, 25-13, 15-13 on Thursday evening to advance to the FIVB Men’s Club World Championship gold-medal match.

Jastrzebski Wegiel will play the winner of the other semifinal match between Trentino Diatec Trento and Zenit Kazan for the title at 7 p.m. Friday, while the bronze medal match of Sesi Sao Paulo and the other semifinal loser will be played Friday at 3 p.m.

Wallace Martins paced Sesi Sao Paulo with 25 points, while Murilo Endres added 17 points. Michal Lasko led Jastrzebski Wegiel with 23 points, followed by 18 points from Zbigniew Bartman and 16 points by Russell Holmes. Jastrzebski Wegiel held a 14-9 block advantage in the match.

“Our team spirit and determination to win was incredible today,” Jastrzebski Wegiel captain Bartman said. “Of course we don't deserve all the credits, we have an amazing coach who kept pushing us to fight and told us not to look back but to keep going.”

“I would like to congratulate the Polish team for placing themselves in the final,” Sesi Sao Paulo coach Giovane Gavio said. “They have showed today that they are a strong team which deserves to win this championship. Today's defeat was definitely caused by too many mistakes on our side.”

Trentino Diatec Trento 3, Zenit Kazan 1
Trentino Diatec Trento defeated Zenit Kazan 25-22, 25-21, 19-25, 25-14 on Thursday evening to advance to the FIVB Men’s Club World Championship gold-medal match against Jastrzebski Wegiel on Friday in Doha, Qatar.

Two-time defending champion Trentino Diatec will attempt to win their third consecutive FIVB Men’s Club World Championship in Friday’s gold-medal match. The squad has now won 14 straight matches in the tournament dating back to 2009 with all the contests being played in Doha.

Matey Kaziyski sparked Trentino Diatec with 17 points, while Osmany Juantorena and Jan Stokr added 16 points. Zenit Kazan was led by Maxim Mikhaylov and his 25 points, while Yury Berzhko contributed 12 points. While Zenit Kazan held advantages of 11-8 in blocks, Trentino Diatec secured a 59-47 margin in attack points.

“We're very satisfied with our performance of today,” Trentino Diatec captain Matey Kaziyski said. “Our team spirit and determination to win was great. We had our difficulties, but we managed to keep control and win this match. Tomorrow we'll play against the Polish team (Jastrzebski Wegiel), another strong team. They have really impressed me in this competition.”

“The Italians have an incredibly strong team, and are just difficult to play against,” Zenit Kazan coach Vladimir Alekno said. “I wish them good luck in tomorrow's final.”
