Doha, Qatar, October 10, 2011 – Dominican Republic’s Mirador Santo Domingo rallied from two sets down and scored the first five points of the tiebreaker to defeat Kenya Prisons Nairobi 20-25, 20-25, 25-20, 26-24, 15-7 on Monday morning on the third day of competition in the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship being held in Doha, Qatar.
Jeoselina Rodriguez paced Mirador with 25 points, while Yonkaira Paola Pena Isabel added 19 points. Kenya Prisons used a balanced scoring attack as Brackcides Khadambi led four players in double-figures with 20 points. Evelyne Makuta and Mercy Moim contributed 16 points for Kenya Prisons.
Kenya Prisons held a 7-4 ace advantage, but their 33 errors allowed Mirador to come back in the match.
Mirador ended Pool A with a 1-1 record, while Kenya Prisons lost in their first match of the competition. Kenya Prisons close out the group on Oct. 12 at 5 p.m. versus VakifBank TTelekom Istanbul. The top two teams in the two three-team pools advance to the semifinal round on Oct. 13.

Mercy Moim served consecutive aces to allow Kenya Prisons to move in front 3-2 early in the opening set. However, Mirador scored four unanswered points for a 6-3 lead with a Martinez spike followed by two Kenya Prisons errors and a Deborah Constanzo ace. Maiyo served an ace to close Kenya Prisons to within one at 7-6. Rodriguez hit a cross-court winner to extend the Mirador lead to 9-6. Moim connected for a deep attack to reduce Kenya Prisons’ deficit to 9-8. Brayelin Elizabeth Martinez and Rodriguez scored back-to-back points to lift Mirador to a 13-10 advantage, only to have Maiyo convert an attack to move Kenya Prisons back to within one at 13-12. Maiyo tied the set at 15-all, then put Kenya Prisons in front 16-15 with another kill heading into the second technical timeout. Out of the break, Makuto added another point to the 4-0 run leading to Mirador calling a timeout down 17-15. A Mirador error increased Kenya Prisons’ lead to 18-15 before Martinez ended the scoring drought with a cross-court winner. Maiyo served an ace after a Mirador service error to increase Kenya Prisons’ advantage to 20-16. Brackcides Khadambi served an ace to yield set points for Kenya Prisons at 24-19, then powered home the winner at 25-20. Maiyo ended the first set with a Kenya Prisons team-high six points, while Martinez scored seven points for Mirador.
Mirador opened the second set with the first two points, only to have Kenya Prisons take the lead at 3-2 with a Diana Khisa block between two Mirador errors. Mirador’s ninth error of the match added to Kenya Prisons’ lead to 6-4. Kenya Prisons went into the first technical timeout with an 8-5 lead following a Jane Wairimu spike. Kenya Prisons jumped their margin to 12-7 following a Khisa block. Constanzo served an ace and Kenya Prisons committed an error to reduce Mirador’s deficit to 12-10. Mirador moved to within one point at 13-12 with a Yonkaira Paola Pena Isabel service ace. However, Kenya Prisons scored three straight points capped by a Khadambi spike giving her team a 16-12 advantage at the second technical timeout. Mirador scored the first two points out of the break cut the deficit in half at 16-14. Maiyo extended Kenya Prisons advantage to 21-17 with a spike prompting Mirador to call timeout, then added two more points on an attack and block to push the margin to 23-17. Mirador cut two points off the deficit to 23-19 with a Constanzo ace after a Kenya Prisons error. Makuto ended the set with the winning attack at 25-20. Kenya Prisons totaled five blocks in the second set to offset Mirador’s three aces.
Mirador earned an early 5-3 advantage in the third set. Constanzo put up a block to lift Mirador to an 8-5 lead at the first technical timeout. Kenya Prisons used errors by Mirador to level the score at 11-all. Marianne Fersola pounded an overpass to put Mirador in front 15-12 as Kenya Prisons called timeout after giving up three straight points. Pena Isabel attacked off the Kenya Prisons block to lift Mirador to a 16-12 lead at the second technical timeout. Makuto and Khadambi connected for consecutive spikes to reduce the gap to 21-18 after trailing by five points. Martinez, who did not enter the third set until late, scored the final point for Mirador at 25-20.
Mirador earned the first two-point cushion of the fourth set after Rodriguez tapped down an overpass at 4-2, only to have Kenya Prisons rally to knot the score at 4-4. Khadambi served an ace to yield an 8-6 Kenya Prisons lead at the first technical timeout. Mirador tied the set at 8-all with a Pena Isabel point. Mirador established a 14-11 advantage after consecutive Kenya Prisons errors and a Rodriguez spike. Mirador went into the second technical timeout leading 16-12 following a Kenya Prisons error. Trailing by five, Kenya Prisons scored three consecutive points including a Khadambi ace and Moim spike to reduce the deficit to 18-16. Martinez hit through the Kenya Prisons to give Mirador set points at 24-20. Kenya Prisons saved four sets points to tie the score at 24-all on Moim’s spike. Pena Isabel ended the set with a block at 26-24. Rodriguez scored eight points for Mirador in the fourth set to force the tiebreaker.
Rodriguez tipped an attack over the Kenya Prisons block and Moreno followed with a point to give Mirador an early 3-0 lead in the tiebreaker. Mirador added a fourth straight point on a bad set by Keya Prisons and Rodriguez hit another winner at 5-0. Mirador reached court the switch leading 8-1 and held an 11-3 margin. Constanzo won the final point at 15-7 on a block.
