Doha, Qatar, October 9, 2011 – Brazil’s Sollys Nestle Osasco used a 25-9 block advantage to defeat Thailand’s Chang Bangkok 25-17, 25-21, 24-26, 26-24 on Sunday morning in the opening match for both teams in the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship being held in Doha, Qatar.

Ivna Marra led five Sollys Nestle Osasco in double-figure scoring with 22 points, while Samara Almeida added 17 points and Juliana Costa contributed 15 points.  Adenizia Silva charted a match-high seven blocks with 12 points, while Ana Beatriz Correa ended with 12 points and six blocks. Chang Bangkok were paced by captain Wilavan Apinyapong’s 20 points. Onuma Sittirak and Pleumjit Thinkaow contributed 15 points each in the losing effort.

Along with their domination on the block, Sollys Nestle Osasco produced a 6-2 margin in aces. Chang Bangkok held a 58-53 attack advantage.

Sollys Nestle Osasco conclude Pool A action on Oct. 12 against Rabita Baku of Azerbaijan, while Chang Bangkok round out their Pool A schedule against Rabita Baku on Oct. 11. The top two teams in the two three-team pools advance to the semifinal round on Oct. 13.

Sollys Nestle Osasco built an early 4-1 lead in the opening set that included blocks by Almeida and Silva. After Chang Bangkok closed to 4-3, Sollys Nestle Osasco scored three unanswered points including another Almeida block to build a 7-3 advantage. Chang Bangkok responded with three consecutive points to move back to within one at 7-6. Costa slammed a spike to yield a 10-6 advantage for Sollys Nestle Osasco. Chang Bangkok sliced the deficit in half at 10-8, leading to a Sollys Nestle Osasco timeout. A quick attack scored by Almeida and an ace by Souza netted a 15-9 Sollys Nestle Osasco advantage. Chang Bangkok closed the gap to 15-11 following an attack error by the Brazilian club. Marra and Correa scored consecutive blocks to extend Sollys Nestle Osasco’s lead to 18-12. Thinkaow blocked an attack to narrow the deficit to 19-14. Marra found open court for an ace to highlight a 4-0 run to 23-14. Chang Bangkok scored three straight points to reduce the deficit to 23-17, only to have Almeida serve an ace on the final point at 25-17. Sollys Nestle Osasco served four aces in the opening set and held a 5-1 block advantage to offset their seven errors.

The second set was closely contested through the first technical timeout as Sollys Nestle Osasco reached the break with a slim 8-7 advantage. Apinyapong spiked Chang Bangkok to an 11-10 advantage, followed by a Hyapha ace at 12-10 as part of a 3-0 scoring run. Almeida hit a spike off the block to level the score at 12-all. A quick attack from Thinkaow returned Chang  Bangkok to a two-point edge at 14-12. Souza spiked a second contact for a point and Costa blocked an attack to push Sollys Nestle Oscasco to a 16-14 advantage at the second technical timeout. Sittirak quickly knotted the score at 16-all with a spike after a Sollys attack error. Silva blocked a Chang Bangkok attack to regain a two-point cushion for Sollys Nestle Osasco at 18-16, only to have Chang Bangkok take the lead at 20-19 on a Sittirak spike and Sollys Nestle Osasco attack error. Silva put up a block to reverse the score to Sollys Nestle Osasco’s favor at 21-20. After a Chang Bangkok timeout, Marra and Silva added two more blocks to extend the lead to 23-20. Marra gave Sollys Nestle Osasco set points at 24-20 with an attack point to cap a 5-0 scoring run. Almeida ended the set with a spike at 25-21. Sollys Nestle Osasco turned in eight blocks in the second set.

Sollys Nestle Osasco built a 4-1 lead in the third set after a Correa spike. Chang Bangkok battled back to within one at 5-4. A Silva block and Correa ace forced Chang Bangkok to call timeout trailing 10-6. Out of the break, Sollys Nestle Osasco added to the lead with an errant Chang Bangkok attack at 11-6. Chang Bangkok narrowed the deficit to 15-12 with a block from Kanthong. Chang Bangkok continued to put pressure on Sollys Nestle Osasco by tying the score at 16-all with a Kanthong ace, the fourth straight point out of the second technical timeout. Apinyapong and Thinkaow gave Chang Bankgok a 19-17 advantage with consecutive spikes as part of a 7-1 scoring run. Sollys Nestle Osasco leveled the score at 20-all after an Apinyapong attack error. Costa and Marra slammed consecutive attacks to provide Sollys Nestle Osasco a 22-21 lead, which was followed by a Silva block for a two-point cushion at 23-21. Marra added a second straight block at 24-21. Chang Bangkok saved two set and match points to close to 24-23, then Apinyapong tied the set at 24-all with a spike. Hyapha and Apinyapong connected for consecutive spikes to finish the 5-0 rally and 26-24 victory.

Sollys Nestle Osasco reached the fourth set’s first technical timeout leading 8-6 after a Chang Bangkok back-row attack error. The lead extended to 9-6 after a Chang Bangkok attack went wide for a third straight Sollys Nestle Osasco point. Chang Bangkok rallied to within one at 10-9, then knotted the score at 11-11 on a Kanthong block. Thinkaow hit around the block to give Chang Bangkok a 14-13 advantage. Marra pounded a spike through the Chang defense for a 15-14 Sollys Nestle Osasco lead. Chang Bangkok regained the advantage at 19-18 following a Sollys Nestle Osasco attack error. Correa put up a block after an Almeida spike to reverse the advantage to Sollys Nestle Osasco at 22-21. Sittirak blocked a Sollys Nestle Osasco attack to place Chang Bangkok back in front 23-22. Costa fired a spike and Souza followed with an ace to switch the advantage back to Sollys Nestle Osasco at 25-24. Costa ended the match with a block at 26-24, the team’s 25 block of the contest.
