Doha, Qatar, October 8, 2011 – VakifBank TTelekom Istanbul of Turkey handled Mirador Santo Domingo of Dominican Republic 25-13, 25-19, 25-14 in the opening match of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship on Saturday afternoon in Doha, Qatar.
VakifBank TTelekom Istanbul’s Malgorzata Glinka scored a match-high 18 points, while Jelena Nikolic added 13 points. Mirador Santo Domingo was led by Jeoselina Rodriguez’s 10 points, while young star Elizabeth Martinez added 7 points.
VakifBank TTelekom out-blocked Mirador 8-4 and held an 11-4 ace advantage.
VakifBank TTelekom Istanbul concludes its three-team Pool A group on Oct. 12 versus Kenya Prisons Nairobi, while Mirador Santo Domingo looks to even its group record against Kenya Prisons Nairobi on Oct. 10. The top two teams in the two four-team first-round pools advance to the cross-over semifinal round on Oct. 13.

VakifBank TTelekom started the opening set with a 9-5 advantage after consecutive blocks. Mirador scored four of the next five points to close to within one at 10-9. Toksov served two aces in a 5-0 run to push VakifBank TTelekom into a 15-9 lead. Mirador called their second timeout down 19-12 following a Glinka sharp angle attack. VakifBank TTelekom closed the set with a 25-13 victory which included four blocks.
The second set began with VakifBank TTelekom taking an 8-5 lead into the first technical timeout. Mirador rallied to within one point at 10-9, only to have VakifBank TTelekom notch four straight points to assume a 15-11 lead. Mirador saved two set points before VakifBank TTelekom ended the set 25-19 on a Glinka spike. Jelena Nikolic led VakifBank TTelekom with six points in the second set.
VakifBank TTelekom maintained momentum in the third set, taking a 16-7 lead at the second technical timeout. The winning side continued their domination by winning the third set 25-14.
