Team profile
Vakifbank telecom Istanbul started life in 1986 and a year after being established, qualified for the Women’s A1 League, the first club to achieve this. In 1999 they joined forces with Ankara club Ankara Vak?fbank and since then have competed under one banner.
Since merging, the side has seen much success, winning the Turkish Championship twice in 2003/04 and 2004/05 as well as the European Challenge Cup in 2008 and, most recently, the Champions League earlier this year, becoming the first Turkish team to win the title.
Coach profile
Giovanni Guidetti was born in Modena and despite playing early on, he turned to coaching at a young age, taking control of an Italian A2 club at the age of 23.
From 1997 to 2000 he worked as assistant coach for the
Italian Woman National team and at the same time, coached the Italy junior team.
He then moved on to coach in USA before returning to his native Italy to take the reigns at Vicenza where he won the Super Cup.
2002 saw hime coach the Bulgarian women’s team before spells with Italian outfits Modena and Chieri, the latter of whom he helped take to a silver medal in the 2003 CEV Champions League.
Since 2004 he has coached the Germany women’s team, taking them to bronze at the 2009 World Grand Prix.
He arrived at Vakifbank Gune? Sigorta Turk Telekom Istanbul for the 2008/09 season, winning the Turkish title in his first season before, two years later, clinching the club’s, and the country’s, first Champions League crown.
