Doha, Qatar, October 12, 2011 – Italy’s Trentino Diatec Trento came out on top of Pool B of the FIVB Men’s Club World Championship by defeating Brazil’s Sesi Sao Paulo 18-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-21 on Wednesday at Doha, Qatar.
With the victory, Trentino Diatec (3-0) will play Pool A second-place Zenit Kazan (2-1) in the semifinals on Thursday at 7 p.m. Sesi Sao Paulo (2-1) will challenge Pool A winner KS Jastrzebski Wegiel (3-0) at 3 p.m. Trentino Diatec, which has won 13 consecutive matches in FIVB Men’s Club World Championship matches dating back to 2009, are attempting to win their third straight FIVB Men’s Club World Championship.
Trentino Diatec was led by Tsvetan Sokolov’s 18 points, while Osmany Juantorena contributed 11 points. Sidnei dos Santos Junior was credited with 14 points to lead Sesi Sao Paulo, while Murilo Endres added 12 points.
Sesi Sao Paulo held advantages in attacks points (48-46) and aces (9-5), but 32 errors hurt in the end. Trentino Diatec held a slim 10-9 margin in blocks.

Wallace Martins served an ace and Sidnei dos Santos Junior slammed an attack point to put Sesi Sao Paulo in front 8-4 at the first technical timeout of the opening set. A Murilo Endres block pushed the Sesi Sao Paulo advantage to 11-6, only to have Trentino Diatec come back with two straight points including a Lukasz Zygdalo block at 11-8. Sesi Sao Paulo’s margin reached five at 15-10 on a Trentino Diatec error. Sesi Sao Paulo climbed to a 21-14 advantage forcing Trentino Diatec into a timeout. Martins dinked a shot over the Trentino Diatec block to yield set points at 24-17. Rodrigo Sanata converted the final attack at 25-18. Murilo topped Sesi Sao Paulo with five points in the opening set as his team converted 54 percent of their 28 attacks.
After Trentino Diatec gain a 4-2 lead, Sesi Sao Paulo bounced back to knot the score at 4-all on a Wallace attack. Sesi Sao Paulo led 10-9 after a Murilo back-row attack. Trentino Diatec went back in front 13-11 following consecutive Mitar Tzouritzs blocks. Trentino Diatec extended their advantage to 15-12 on a Sesi Sao Paulo attack error. Sandro Barbalho cut the deficit to 15-14 with a block. Sesi Sao Paulo tied the net on a Trentino Diatec attack error at 16-all. Rodrigao put up a block to reverse the lead to Sesi Sao Paulo at 18-17, then Trentino Diatec hit long to extend the margin to 19-17. The advantage moved to three points at 20-17 on another Rodrigao block. Barbalho hit off the Sesi Sao Paulo block and Santos Junior put up a block to level the score at 20-all. Trentino Diatec went back into the lead at 21-20 on a Tsvetan Sokolov block. Out of a Sesi Sao Paulo timeout, Trentino Diatec extended the lead to 22-20 on another attack error by Sesi. Trentino Diatec held the advantage to 25-23, winning on a service error. Osmany Juantorena and Tsvetan Sokolov scored five points for Trentino in the second set.
Tzourits served an ace and Juantorena followed with a spike to yield a 3-1 Trentino Diatec lead early in the third set. Dore Della Lunga tallied an attack point to inch Trentino Diatec’s lead to 6-3. Leonardo Cruz Miranda served an ace allowing Sesi Sao Paulo to move within one at 7-6. Sokolov created a block to increase the Trentino lead to 12-9. Consecutive blocks by Santos Junior closed the gap to 12-11. Trentino Diatec answered with three straight points capped by a Juantorena ace at 15-11. Emanuele Birarelli slammed a quick attack to extend the Trentino Diatec advantage to 17-12. Birarelli launched an ace to secure a six-point margin at 21-15. Consecutive Trentino Diatec errors narrowed the deficit to 23-20. Out of a Trentino Diatec timeout, Juleandro Rodrigues served an ace and Trentino Diatec allowed a dig fall on their side of the net to close the gap to a single point at 23-22. Santos Junior leveled the score at 23-all with a power spike out of the middle to cap a 5-0 scoring run. However, Trentino Diatec stopped the run and Steve Brinkman served an ace to close set 25-23.
Sesi Sao Paulo used five different starters in the fourth set compared to the third set. Matey Kaziyski served a Trentino Diatec ace to increase his club’s lead to 5-3 in the fourth set. Santos Junior took a quick attack to tie the score at 6-all and Diogo De Andrade followed with an ace to put Sesi Sao Paulo in front 7-6. However, it was Trentino Diatec that reached the first technical timeout with the 8-7 after a Birarelli block. Santos Junior served an ace after an Andre Ryuma Oto spike to put Sesi Sao Paulo in front 9-8. Sesi Sao Paulo benefited from a Trentino Diatec attack error to inch the lead to 13-11. Trentino Diatec leveled the score at 13-all on back-to-back Sesi Sao Paulo errors. Trentino Diatec reached the second technical timeout with a 16-15 advantage as Sesi Sao Paulo hit wide of the antenna. The expanded to 18-15 out of the break with two consecutive Sesi Sao Paulo attack errors. Santos Junior earned an ace to cut the gap to 19-18. Sokolov rebuilt the three-point cushion with a block at 21-18. Kaziyski gave Trentino Diatec a 23-19 advantage. Trentino ended the set with a Brinkman spike at 25-21.
