KS Jastrzebski 3, Trinity Western Spartans 0
Poland’s KS Jastrzebski Wegiel defeated Canada’s Trinity Western Spartans Vancouver 25-17, 25-20, 25-18 on Tuesday in a Pool A match of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship at Doha, Qatar.
Jastrzebski Wegiel concluded Pool A with a 3-0 record and head into the semifinals on October 13 as the group’s top seed. The squad will play the second seed from Pool B, which will be the loser of Wednesday’s Trentino Diatec Trento-Sesi Sao Paulo match. Trinity Western finished the tournament with a 1-2 pool record.
Michal Lasko totaled 17 points in leading Jastrzebski Wegiel, while Russell Holmes contributed 11 points. The young Trinity Western Spartans had 10 of their players reach the scoring column led by Bradley Kufske’s 11 points. Jastrzebski Wegiel benefited from 23 errors by Trinity Western, which out-blocked the winning team 10-7. Jastrzebski Wegiel limited their errors to seven.
“Today's game was very difficult for us. Great defense from Trinity,” Jastrzebski Wegiel captain Zbigniew Bartman said. “We're obviously happy with this victory. It was our goal to win all matches, if possible. And it is still our goal, but we have some tough games in front of us. We are preparing very hard for these games and are hoping to win at least one of them.”
“As our last match, we're a little disappointed,” Trinity Western Spartans Vancouver captain Rudy Verhoeff said. “We were too sloppy in the easy plays. The average age of our team is five years younger than the rest of the teams participating in this competition. We're very happy to have had this opportunity and it gave us a clear view on where we need to be and what we need to work on.”
Trentino Diatec Trento 3, Al-Arabi Doha 0
Italy’s Trentino Diatec Trento stopped Qatar’s Al-Arabi Doha 25-22, 25-15, 25-17 in a Pool B match.
With the victory, two-time defending champions Trentino Diatec improved to 2-0 with six points and earned a spot into the semifinal round on October 13. Before the semifinal round, the club will conclude pool play against Brazil’s Sesi Sao Paulo (2-0, 6 points) in a battle of undefeated teams. The winner of Wednesday’s pool match will play Russia’s Zenit Kazan (2-1, 7 points), while the loser will face Pool A winner KS Jastrzebsi Wegiel (3-0, 8 points). Al-Arabi Doha end the tournament with a 1-2 record.
Matey Kaziyski sparked Trentino Diatec Trento with 14 points, while Emanuele Birarelli added 11 points. Christian Pampel paced Al-Arabi Doha with 12 points. Trentino Diatec held a 10-2 service ace advantage, as well as an 8-2 block margin.
“Today's victory was very important for us,” said Kaziyski, Trentino Diatec’s captain. “Even though 3-0 is a good result, we're stil not satisfied. We can't seem to find the rhythm of our normal play style. We aren't aggressive and decisive enough right from the start, which is something we need to resolve as soon as possible.”
“It was a difficult match,” Al-Arabi Doha coach Adel Sennoun said. “We have played three matches within four days, with the same players. Some of them were exhausted, which caused some injuries. One of the main reasons of our defeat was the incredibly strong serve of the Italians, especially in the second and third set.”
