Jastrzebski Wegiel 3-0 in Pool Play with win over Trinity Western Spartans


Jastrzebski Wegiel finished 3-0 in FIVB Volleyball Men's Club World Championship Pool A and will advance to the semifinal round on October 13

Doha, Qatar, October 11, 2011 – Poland’s KS Jastrzebski Wegiel defeated Canada’s Trinity Western Spartans Vancouver 25-17, 25-20, 25-18 on Tuesday in a Pool A match of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship at Doha, Qatar.

Jastrzebski Wegiel conclude Pool A with a 3-0 record and head into the semifinals on October 13 as the group’s top seed. The squad will play the second seed from Pool B, which will be determined after Wednesday’s final pool match between Sesi Sao Paulo (2-0) and Trentino Diatec Trento (1-0), which also play Al-Arabi Doha (1-1) later on Tuesday night. Trinity Western finished the tournament with a 1-2 pool record.

Michal Lasko totaled 17 points in leading Jastrzebski Wegiel, while Russell Holmes contributed 11 points. The young Trinity Western Spartans had 10 of their players reach the scoring column led by Bradley Kufske’s 11 points.

Jastrzebski Wegiel benefited from 23 errors by Trinity Western, which out-blocked the winning team 10-7. Jastrzebski Wegiel limited their errors to seven.

Jastrzebski Wegiel opened the first set with a 6-2 lead and reached the first technical timeout leading 8-5 as Trinity Western committed four early errors. Ben Ball took an overpass for a point to close the gap to 9-8. Jastrzebski Wegiel inched their lead to 15-11 on Trinity Western miscues. Russell Holmes took a quick attack out of the middle to extend the Jastrzebski lead to 21-16 at a Trinity Western timeout. Jastrzebski Wegiel ended the set with a Holmes block, his fourth point of the set, at 25-17. Zbigniew Bartman paced Jastrzebski Wegiel with five attacks in the opening set, while seven different Trinity Western players scored between one and three points. Trinity Western committed nine errors in the set.

Jastrzebski Wegiel started four different starters in the second set. After trailing 5-2 to start the second set, Trinity Western scored the next two points including an ace by Derek Thiessen. Lucas Van Berkel tied the set at 6-all with a spike. Ashlei Nemer served an ace heading into the first technical timeout to yield an 8-6 lead for Jastrzebski Wegiel. However, Van Berkel answered with an ace after his team sided out to knot the score at 8-all. Thiessen then added a third and fourth straight points to produce a 10-8 advantage for Trinity Western. Jastrzebski Wegiel tied the set at 11-all on a service winner by Raphael Margarido. Jastrzebski Wegiel went in front 15-13 on consecutive Trinity Western errors. Jastrzebski Wegiel went into the second technical timeout up 16-13 after a Bartosz Gawryszewski quick attack. Michal Lasko served an ace to push the Jastrzebski margin to 20-14. Bradley Kufske hit a cross-court winner and Branden Schmidt put up a block to cut the deficit to 21-18. Holmes scored an attack and block to give Jastrzebski Wegiel set points at 24-19. The set ended at 25-20 on a bad set by Trinity Western. Lasko tallied six points for Jastrzebski Wegiel in the second set, while Kufske tallied seven points for Trinity Western.

Van Berkel put up a block to help Trinity Western secure a 4-2 lead in the third set. Jastrzebski Wegiel gained the lead at 6-5 on a reception error, then increased the margin to 7-5 on another Trinity Western error. Holmes blocked back a Trinity Western attack and Lasko slammed an attack on first contact to extend the Jastrzebski lead to 11-6. Schmidt succeeded on a block to help Trinity Western move to within 12-9. However, Jastrzebski Wegiel collected the next three points including an ace by Holmes 15-9. Luiciano Bozko served an ace to increase the margin to 19-11. Jastrzebski Wegiel concluded the match with a 25-18 victory.
