Trinity Western Spartans rally past Paykan to earn first Club World Championship victory

Doha, Qatar, October 10, 2011 – Canada’s Trinity Western Spartans Vancouver scored 27 blocks and rallied to defeat Paykan 25-23, 18-25, 17-25, 25-18, 15-6 for their first match of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship on Monday in Doha, Qatar.

Trinity Western improved to 1-1 with the victory and will play Poland’s Jastrzebski Wegiel on Tuesday at 5 p.m. Paykan conclude the tournament at 0-3.

Rudy Verhoeff paced Trinity Western with 26 points, while Steve Marshall added 15 points. Philippe Barca-Cysique led Paykan with 17 points, while Vali Nourmohammadi contributed 13 points.

Trinity Western held a 27-7 block advantage in the match, while both teams had five service aces. Offsetting their block advantage, Trinity Western committed 34 errors to Paykan’s 18.

Trinity Western went up 4-2 in the opening set after blocks from Marc Howatson and Lucas Van Berkel. Rudy Verhoeff scored consecutive points lift Trinity Western to a 6-3 advantage. Steve Marshall scored consecutive spikes and Van Berkel put up a block to extend the Trinity Western margin to 11-6 at a Paykan timeout. Philippe Barca-Cysique scored a kill around three Trinity Western errors to close Paykan’s deficit to a single point at 11-10. Verhoeff stopped the run with a spike and Ball added a block to rebuild a 14-11 advantage, only to have Paykan score the next two points to return to within one at 14-13. Jansen van Doorn put up a block after a Van Berkel spike to increase the Trinity Western margin to 17-14. Alireza Mobasheri tipped an attack over the Trinity Western block to narrow the deficit to 17-16. Van Berkel put up a block after a Paykan service error, then Ball served an ace to produce a 21-17 Trinity Western lead. Mohssen Andalib slammed a spike past Trinity Western, which then hit an attack wide to close the gap to 23-22. After Andalib saved a set point with a block, Verhoeff attacked off the Paykan block for Trinity Western’s final point at 25-23. Trinity Western scored seven points off the block, while Verhoeff totaled 10 points for his squad.

Vali Nourmohammadi lifted Paykan to a 4-2 advantage early in the second set. He then slammed an attack for another point followed by an Andalib ace and Trinity Western attack error to stretch the Paykan advantage to 8-3 at the first technical timeout. Barca-Cysique served an ace to push the Paykan lead to 10-4. Van Berkel blocked down a Paykan attack after a Verhoeff spike to reduce the Trinity Western margin to 11-7. Paykan regained its six-point edge with an Andalib attack at 13-7. Howatson and Jansen van Doorn produced consecutive blocks in narrowing Trinity Western’s deficit to 16-12. Verhoeff took two attacks off the Paykan block to move Trinity Western to three at 19-16. Barca-Cysique controlled an attack through Trinity’s block to take Paykan to a 21-16 lead. Nourmohammadi gave Paykan set points at 24-18 on a block, then Taher Vadi Mohammad served an ace for the 25-18 winner. Andalib and Mobasheri scored five points each for Paykan in the second set.

Paykan scored the first two points of the third set, only to have Trinity Western recover to it at 2-all. Trinity Western went in front 6-5 on a Jansen van Doorn block, then Marshall ricocheted an attack off the block for a two-point cushion at 7-5. Out of the technical timeout, Marshall added an attack point for a 9-6 advantage. Paykan moved back to within one at 10-9 on a Hesam Bakhsheshi block, then tied the set at 9-all on a Trinity Western error. Paykan took the lead at 12-11 on a bad set, then Trinity Western hit wide to lift Paykan in front 13-11. Paykan reached the second technical timeout leading 16-12 on a Nourmohammadi spike and Trinity Western error. Nourmohammadi scored a block and Mobasheri slammed a spike at 20-14. Out of a Trinity Western timeout, Paykan increased their margin to 21-14 on an opponent error. Bakhsheshi put up a block to give Paykan set points at 24-17, then Trinity Western hit into the antenna on the next play for the 25-17 score.

Trinity Western took a 3-1 lead to start the fourth set with a Marshall attack and Ball ace. Paykan tied the set at 3-all. Nourmohammadi downed an attack to yield a 6-5 Paykan lead. Ball put up a block to pull Trinity Western to an 8-5 lead at the first technical timeout. Out of the break, Verhoeff served an ace to increase the advantage to 9-6. Trinity Western extended the lead to 12-8 on a Branden Schmidt ace. Barca-Cysique trimmed the Trinity Western lead to 13-11 on an attack. Nick Del Biano and Verhoeef scored consecutive blocks to place Trinity Western in front 16-11 at the second technical timeout. Out of the break, Marshall served an ace to increase the lead to 17-11. Del Bianco found open space on an attack and added a block to push the advantage to 20-12. Trinity Western ended the set at 25-18 on a Verhoeff block.

Howatson and Van Berkel put up blocks to provide Trinity Western a 5-2 lead in the fifth set. Howatson pounded an attack off the block to push the lead to 6-2 leading into a Paykan timeout. Paykan committed an error out of the break to yield a 7-2 Trinity Western lead. Trinity Western continued their momentum in taking an eight-point advantage at 12-4 on a Jansen van Doorn block. Jansen van Doorn added another block at 13-4. Trinity Western ended the match at 15-6.
