Doha, Qatar, October 8, 2011 – KS Jastrzebski Weigel of Poland topped Paykan Tehran of Iran 25-18, 25-14, 25-14 Saturday on the opening day of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship in Doha, Qatar.
KS Jastrzebski Wegiel’s Zbigniew Bartman totaled a match-high 11 points. Jastrzebski Wegiel produced a balanced scoring match as 11 of their players scored at least one point during the match. Paykan Tehran’s Reza Safaei and Hesam Bakhsheshi led their team with 7 points each.
Jastrzebski Wegiel produced an 9-1 service ace advantage in the match and held their total errors for the match to 13 compared to Paykan’s 26.
KS Jastrzebski Wegiel return to Pool A action on Oct. 10 against Zenit Kazan (1-0), which won their opening match Saturday versus Trinity Western Spartans Vancouver (0-1). Paykan Tehran continue on Oct. 9 against Zenit Kazan. The top two clubs in the two four-team pools advance to the FIVB Club World Championship semifinals on Oct. 13.

The opening set was close in the early stages with Jastrzebski Wegiel leading 8-7 at the first technical timeout. Out of the break, Jastrzebski scored consecutive points including a Lasko ace leading to a Paykan timeout down 10-7. Paykan bounced back with consecutive points to close to 10-9. Jastrzebski Wegeil responded with six of the next eight points for a 16-11 advantage at the second technical timeout. Paykan sliced the deficit to 17-15 following a Bakhsheshi spike and Safaei block. Jastrzebski Wegiel ended the set with an 8-3 run and 25-18 victory, which included four aces by the team. Lasko scored a team-high four points the opening set.
Jastrzebski Wegiel reached the second set’s first technical timeout leading 8-6, then Russell Holmes served an ace and Michal Kubiak redirected an overpass for a point out of the break for a 10-6 lead. Jastrzebski Wegiel continued to mount pressure forcing Paykan to call a timeout down 13-8. Paykan was unable to reverse the momentum as Jastrzebski reached the second technical timeout up 16-9 on a Johannes Bontje spike and Paykan back-row attack error. Paykan scored two quick points out of the break to narrow the gap to 16-11. Zbigniew Bartman blocked a Paykan attack for a third straight Jastrzebski Wegiel point and 21-12 advantage. Bartman served an ace, his fifth point of the set, to build a 23-13 lead as Jastrzebski Wegiel moved to a 25-14 victory on a Lasko block. Jastrzebski Wegiel scored 12 points off of 17 attacks in the second set to go with three aces.
Jastrzebski Wegiel bolted to an early 8-3 lead in the third set as Paykan’s continued to have issues with service receive. Jastrzebski Wegiel kept their momentum into the second technical timeout with a 16-10 margin. Paykan could not stop Jastrzebski, losing the final set 25-14.
