Cairo, Egypt, April 29, 2011 – Al Ahly of Egypt and National University of Rwanda secured spots in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Men’s African Club Championship after recording their second victory in a row at the Al Ahly Halls in Cairo, Egypt on Friday.
Al Guish of Egypt and Prisons of Cameroon also recorded their second victory but have to wait for Sunday's third and last day of the preliminary round to secure their tickets to the quarters.
Pool D has four teams level on three points with a 1-1 record and thus have to wait to the third day to settle the situation.
The eventual champions will earn a spot at the 2011 FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship, set to take place later this year in Qatar.
Pool A
Hosts Al Ahly of Egypt overpowered Al Nahda of Sudan easily 3-0 (25-9, 25-8, 25-15) in one side game dominated completely by Ahly players. Coach Ibrahim Fakhr Eddine fielded all his list of players and succeeded to give them all the experience of the competition before the more important matches. Al Ahly improved their win-loss ratio to 2-0 to cut a ticket to the quarterfinal while Al Nahda of Sudan dropped to 0-2. National University of Rwanda used the artistry of their opposite Guma Yakan to clinch a strait sets victory over Redskins of Lesotho (25-15, 25-18, 25-18). The National University of Rwanda overwhelmed the net action specially in the first set and used also the combinations led by their setter to deceive the Sudanese block and achieve the victory. The Rwandan team improved their win- loss ratio to 2-0 to secure a quarterfinal berth while Redskins dropped to 0-2.
Pool B
Prisons of Kenya came one more step towards achieving the double qualification to the Club World Championship with their women counterparts after they clinched a very important victory over Port de Douala of Cameroon (25-19, 25-15, 20-25, 25-20) in 96 minutes. The Kenyan team sent their unstoppable hits from all the net positions that weren’t tolerated by the Cameroon team specially in the fourth set that was the most exciting in the match. Prisons improved to 2-0 in 2 matches while Port dropped to 1-1. Through their strong service Inter Club of Congo Brazzaville swept Daim Hamad (SUD) 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-12) in 65 minutes. Inter used the spike service of most of the main line up to put a pressure upon the Sudanese team that made the match easier for them. Inter improved their record to 1-1 and Daim Hamad dropped to 0-2.
Pool C
Al Guish of Egypt continued their winning rhythm and trounced Rukinzo of Burundi 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-16) in 64 minutes. Although the Egyptian team played with most of the players in the list they dominate the match after winning the most difficult first set. Al Guish raised their points to 4 in 2 matches (2-0) and Rukinzo dropped to 0-2. Setif of Algeria regained their rhythm in the second day to outclass Al Saggana of Sudan 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-11) in 64 minutes. The Algerian team was better in all the technical items and succeeded to dominate the match specially after they won the first set. Setif improved to 1-1 and Saggana dropped to 0-2.
Pool D
GSU team of Kenya presented with a completely different performance than tat of the first day as they came back from one set behind to flew past the stron FAP team of Cameroon 3-1 (18-25, 25-18, 25-16, 25-21) in 96 minutes. After FAP team won easily the first set, the Kenyan coach changed the strategy depending on the efficient blockers and the team spiked well specially from position 2 through the opposite David Kirwa to win three successive sets. Both teams were equal in points (3 pts) from 1-1 record. Blida of Algeria regain the trust after losing in the opening day and succeeded to beat the dark horses of the first day Ondo Sunshine Brothers of Nigeria 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-19). The Algerian team used their solid block to stop the strong attackers from Inter Club who did their best to overcome the situation specially in the second set but the Algerians won the critical points towards straight sets victory. Blida improved to 1-1 and Inter Club dropped to 0-2.
