African Club champs begin in Cairo

Egyptian club Guish spike against Algeria's Setif during the opening day of the African Men's Club Championship on Thursday

Cairo, Egypt, April 29, 2011 – The Men’s African Club Championship got underway successfully on Thursday with a lot of surprises and thrills from the newcomers on the opening day of the competition in Cairo, Egypt.

The eventual champions will earn a spot at the 2011 FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship, set to take place later this year in Qatar.

CAVB President Dr Amr Elwani and Egyptian football legend and Vice-President of Al-Ahly club Mahmoud El Khateeb opened the competition which will see 16 teams participate. Also on hand was Organizing Committee President Eng. Hesham Said, the Control Committee President Tubby Reddy, SOC Delegates Amada Sidiyane and Tesfay Asgedom, Refree Delegates Hassan Ahmed and Jaouad Berrada and CAVB Technical Director Howyda Mondy

The opening day saw the traditional forces of Al Ahly of Egypt, FAP of Cameroon and Prisons of Kenya securing their first win while Sunshine Boys of Nigeria and Rukinzo of Burundi provided a number of shocks for the fans.

Pool A
Al Ahly used the support of the home crowd to achieve a straight sets victory over Redskins of Lesotho (25-10, 25-14 25-10) in 61 minutes. The 2,500 spectators made it easy for Ahly, who had nine Egyptian national team players turn out for them, to overcome their opponents quickly.

National University team of Rwanda rebounded from one set behind to outclass Al Nahda of Sudan 3-1 (23-25, 25-14, 25-19, 25-12) in an interesting face off. The Rwandan team was the better side, especially at the net and in quick attacks through the centers.

Pool B
Prisons of Kenya started their campaign in promising style as they saw off Daim Hamad from Sudan 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-21) in 66 minutes.

Meanwhile Douala of Cameroon survived a weak start to overpower Inter Club of Congo 3-1 (21-25, 25-14, 27-25, 25-18).

Pool C
Al Guish of Egypt illustrated consistency through their match with Setif of Algeria to clinch a 3-0 (25-23, 25-13, 25-23) win. Al Guish coach Fouad Abdel Salam fielded the most experienced players and succeeded to lead the match, mostly through their block.

Rukinzo of Burundi however delivered one of the biggest opening day surprises in the history of the tournament as they flew past Al Saggana of Sudan 3-1 (25-16, 25-18, 17-25, 25-23) in an exciting game. Rukinzo had a good start using the disturbance of the Saggana defense even when they lost the weakest third set.

Pool D
FAP of Cameroon recovered from a sluggish start to defeat Blida of Algeria 3-1 (23-25, 32-30, 25-22, 29-27) in 111 minutes. The Cameroonian team regained their composure after dropping the first set to eventually pick up the win.

In the pool’s other match, Ondo Sunshine Brothers from Nigeria also surprised their opponents GSU of Kenya in their first ever appearance at the African showpiece as they achieved a considerable victory 3-2 (22-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-19, 15-9) in 122 minutes.
