Doha, Qatar, October 9, 2011 – Italy’s Trentino Diatec Trento scored a 25-16, 25-22, 25-22 victory over Egypt’s Al-Ahly Cairo on Sunday afternoon in Pool B action of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship being held in Doha, Qatar. Trentino Diatec Trento are aiming for their third straight World Club Championship after having won in 2009 and 2010 in Doha.
The victory marked Trentino Diatec Trento’s first match of the tournament, while Al-Ahly Cairo fall to 0-2 in the pool.
Osmany Juantorena scored 14 points to pace Trentino Diatec Trento, while teammate Matey Kaziyski added 13 points and Jan Stokr 12 points. Ahmed Mohamed contributed 18 points in the loss for Al-Ahly Cairo.
Trentino Diatec held a 10-4 margin in blocks as both teams served three aces. Trentino Diatec Trento held a slim 41-38 attack points advantage.
Trentino Diatec Trento continues Pool B action on Oct. 11 against Qatar’s Al-Arabi Doha, while Al-Ahly Cairo face Brazil’s Sesi Sao Paulo on Oct. 10 for their third match in three days. The top two teams in the two four-team pools advance to the semifinal round on Oct. 13.

Al-Ahly Cairo went up 4-2 in the opening set with aces from Ahmed and Abdelhay. Trentino Diatec Trento took an 8-5 lead into the first technical timeout on consecutive Juantorena attack points, a Birarelli block and Stokr overpass spike as part of a 5-0 scoring run. Al-Ahly leveled the score at 10-all on a Abdelhay spike and Mohamed block, then went in front 11-10 on a long Trentino Diatec Trento attack. Trentino Diatec Trento moved back in front at 13-12 on a Brinkman block, then Kaziyski served an ace leading to a 14-12 advantage. The momentum continued through to a 19-12 advantage as part of a 9-1 scoring spurt. Trentino Diatec Trento closed out the set with a 25-16 victory. Trentino Diatec Trento held their errors to one in the set, while Al-Ahly Cairo committed nine errors.
Al-Ahly Cairo started the second set leading 3-1with an Ahmed block and spikes from Abdelhay and Elkobt. Al-Ahly Cairo extended their lead to 7-4 with a Trentino Diatec Trento error. The Italian club bounced back to knot the score at 7-all on a Brinkman block. Stokr pounded a kill to secure a 9-8 advantage for Trentino Diatec Trento, which expanded the lead to 12-9 on a Al-Ahly Cairo error and Kaziyski ace. Vieira De Oliveira blocked an Al-Ahly Cairo attack at 14-10 leading into a timeout. Out of the break Juantorena rolled a shot off the block to inch the lead to 15-10. Al-Ahly Cairo closed the deficit to 17-14 on Abdelhay block and Ketat attack. However, Trentino Diatec Trento rebuilt their five-point edge at 19-14 following a Juantorena ace. Al-Ahly Cairo moved to within three at 20-17 on an Abdelhay ace. Abdelhay slammed an attack through the block and Trentino Diatec Trento was called for an error to slice the gap to a single point at 22-21. An Al-Ahly Cairo service error and Juantorena spike provided Trentino Diatec Trento with set points at 24-21. Trentino Diatec Trento captured the set 24-21 on a service error.
Birarelli provided Trentino Diatec Trento with a 5-3 margin in the opening phase of the third set. Ahmed blocked an attack to yield an 8-all tie as Al-Ahly Cairo scored consecutive points out of the first technical timeout. A Mohamed spike and Trentino Diatec Trento error led to a 12-10 Al-Ahly Cairo advantage. Trentino Diatec Trento leveled the score at 15-all with a Brinkman block after an Al-Ahly Cairo service error. Trentino Diatec Trento went back in front at 18-17 on an Al-Ahly Cairo attack that went wide of the antenna. However, Al-Ahly Cairo benefited from a Trentino Diatec Trento attack that went wide to regain the lead back at 19-18. Stokr scored consecutive points and Kaziyski added an attack point to lead to a 23-21 advantage for Trentino Diatec Trento. Birarello added a fourth straight point on an overpass spike for match points at 24-21. Kaziyski finished the set with a spike at 25-22.
