Semi lineup set after Drean Bolivar spring surprise

Argentine libero Pablo Meana celebrating the splendid win by his side Dream Bolivar over highly-rated Dynamo Moscow

Doha, Qatar, December 19, 2010 – The semifinals of the 2010 FIVB Club World Championships are set after the completion of the preliminary round on Sunday at the Al-Garafa sports hall. In the men's competition, last year's runners-up PGE Skra Belchatow will play Drean Bolivar after the Argentinians caused a major sensation by beating Russia's Dynamo Moscow in four sets.

The second semifinal will see reigning champions Trentino BetClic from Italy take on Iran's Paykan in a repeat of last year's last-four encounter after the Asian champions defeated local heroes Al Arabi Doha in four sets to claim the second slot available in Pool A on Sunday.

In the women's competition, two classy semifinals are expected with the Italians of Foppapedretti Bergamo facing Brazil's Sollys Osasco while pre-tournament favourites Fenerbahce will take on the Caribbean outsiders of Mirador.

Men
Argentina's Drean Bolivar caused the first major upset of the 2010 FIVB Club World Championships as they defeated Dynamo Moscow in four sets (25-22, 25-22, 21-25, 25-19) to qualify for the semifinals as the second-placed team in Pool B. The South Americans played at their very best while the Russians struggled to find consistency and were hampered by unforced errors.

Federico Pereyra topped the scorers' chart with 16 points with three other Bolivar players – Javier Filardi, Sebastian Sole and Lucas Ocampo – also finishing the game in double digits. Curiously Bolivar outblocked Dynamo 12-9 – a surprise given the Russians' strength in this fundamental thanks to their impressive height and physical skills.

Bolivar's semifinal opponents, Belchatow, outclassed Al Ahly in straight sets (25-13, 25-10, 25-22) to qualify for the semis as the best-ranked team of Pool A. Last year's tournament runners-up from Poland inflicted a third consecutive loss on the African champions who will end the tournament in seventh place. Bartosz Kurek was the game's top scorer with 11 points from the two sets he played.

Defending champions Trentino BetClic completed the preliminary round with a perfect record after beating American side Paul Mitchell in straight sets (25-22, 25-19, 25-20).  The Italians advance to Monday's semis as the first-ranked team from Pool B and will now play the Asian champions, Paykan. Bulgarian opposite Tsvetan Sokolov – replacing Jan Stokr who enjoyed a rest day – topped the scoring chart with 18 points while Casey Patterson was the most prolific scorer for the Americans with 13.

Paykan completed the lineup for the last four by claiming second spot in Pool A after overcoming the hosts, Al Arabi, 25-15, 25-22, 25-27, 25-16. The match's top scorer was Paykan's Seyed Mehdi Bazargarde with an impressive haul of 24 points.

Women
Fenerbahce opened the fourth competition day at the 2010 FIVB Club World Championships by beating Thailand's Federbrau in straight sets (25-20, 25-18, 25-23) to advance to the semis as the best-ranked team of Pool A.

For Federbrau, this second successive loss means they will exit the competition early, ranked in joint-fifth place with Kenya Prisons, the bottom team from Pool B. Fenerbahce will next play the Pool B runners-up, NORCECA representatives Mirador, for the right to advance to the final game of a competition that the FIVB reinstated this year after a hiatus stretching back to 1994. Fenerbahce's Polish opposite, Katarzyna Skowronska, was the match's top scorer with 24 points, with her colleagues Liubov Sokolova and Eda Erdem finishing in double digits also (12 and 15 respectively).
