Club World Championships start on a high note in Doha

The drums of the Qatari audience were the soundtrack for the victory of hosts Al Arabi Doha on Day 1 at the FIVB Club World Championships

Doha, Qatar, December 15, 2010 – Hosts Al Arabi Doha and Argentina's Drean Bolivar enjoyed promising starts on the opening day of the 2010 FIVB Men's Club World Championship as they both recorded victories in four sets. The Qataris had the upper hand in their 'derby' against Al Ahly of Egypt (25-17, 25-27, 25-17, 25-20) while the South Americans came back from one set down to edge out USA's Paul Mitchell (23-25, 27-25, 25-19, 25-21).

In the women's competition, Brazil's Sollys Osasco and Mirador of the Dominican Republic lead Pools A and B after beating Thailand's Federbrau 3-0 (25-15, 26-24, 30-28) and Kenya Prisons 3-0 (25-20, 25-11, 25-17) respectively. After a long hiatus – it had been 16 years since the last edition of the women's competition in Sao Paulo – Mirador and Kenya Prisons had the honour of beginning the reinstated FIVB Women's Club World Championship in what was the day's opening game.

Women
One of the favourites for the title, Sollys Osasco scored their first victory by overcoming Federbrau with Brazilian international Natalia top-scoring in the game with 20 points while two players – Tapaphaipun Chaisri and Pleumjit Tinkaow – bagged nine apiece for Federbrau. The Asian champions battled hard and were level at 24-all in the second set, and also missed set points in the third.

Yet they were up against a Sollys Osasco side featuring some of the most accomplished and decorated Brazilian stars of the past few years – such as Jaqueline, Natalia and Thaisa – and a team, it should be added, who have travelled to Qatar with the clear aim of claiming the crown.

Mirador, meanwhile, were too strong for Kenya Prisons with Dominican Republic international Annerys Vargas topping the scoring with 14 points. A significant factor in the success of the Dominicans was the massive haul of African mistakes, however, totalling 22 in all. What the clubs have in common is a very young roster, with an average age of 23 years, and limited international experience; sadly for the Africans, the experience some of their players gained with Kenya's national team at the FIVB Women's World Championship Japan 2010 did not have too positive an effect here.

Men
Al Arabi Doha opened their home campaign on a high note as they won the last match on Day 1 by edging out African champions Al Ahly in four sets (25-17, 25-27, 25-17, 25-20). The Qataris were especially impressive in the third and fourth sets as they secured a victory built on their greater efficiency in both serving – they recorded 10 aces to Al Ahly's five – and blocking (10-5 too). The game's top scorer was the home team's German import, Christian Pampel, a veteran of the Italian league, with 25 points.

Drean Bolivar claimed their first victory in Pool B as Javier Weber's team produced a solid performance to come back from one set down against USA's Paul Mitchell. The South Americans needed some time to warm up and get into the game but their dominance was absolutely evident in sets three and four and they had the top scorer in the match in Federico Pereyra, who contributed 24 points for the victors.
