 Press Release
Qatar gets set for a festival of Volleyball

A view of the Al-Garafa sports hall in Doha, venue for the 2010 FIVB Club World Championships

Doha, Qatar, December 13, 2010 – Some 36 hours are left before the start of the 2010 FIVB Club World Championships in Doha, Qatar and as the participating teams arrive in this wealthy emirate, preparations are continuing at full speed for what promises to be a memorable event, not just for Qatar, but also for the international Volleyball family.

"I would like to state that FIVB officials and local organisers are here to join their respective forces together, in a real spirit of friendship and mutual cooperation, in order to turn this Championship into a very successful and exciting event," said Mr Khalid Ali Al-Mawlawi, the young president of the Qatar Volleyball Association, as he addressed the members of the FIVB Control Committee.

An inspection visit was held this afternoon to check the quality of the impressive facilities provided by the Qataris for the event. The venue for all the matches will be the Al-Garafa indoor hall, which is a splendid arena located right in the middle of a majestic sports complex, one of several that the state of Qatar has created to facilitate the organisation of major international sports events here.

Right next to the hall, and with the cooperation of a Dutch company, the Qataris have set up a tent with two warm-up courts, whose installation was completed in only four days. The speed of that operation followed a common pattern here in Qatar as the country – and especially its capital city, Doha – is continuously changing to meet the highest international standards, meeting this goal with a look that combines modernity and Arabic traditions.

With the splendid Aspire Academy for Excellence, Qatar's most illustrious sports venue, unavailable – it had been pre-booked for the upcoming Asian Football Cup – the 2010 FIVB Club World Championships were forced to relocate to another venue but the Al-Garafa sports complex will certainly meet the expectations of all participating teams. Moreover, the premises of the Qatar Volleyball Association will also play host to some teams competing in the women's tournament, as another training gym is located there next to a swimming pool and football pitch owned and managed by Al Arabi, Doha's most influential and decorated sports club.

Qatar is doing its best to host a unique Volleyball festival and after last year's return of the men's championship, this year's event has an additional attraction with the re-introduction of the women's tournament, last held back in 1994 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. And with the world's Volleyball elite included in the starting field, Qatar will certainly draw much attention in the next few days from the media as well as those who love Volleyball.
