 Press Release
In-form Belchatow taking one game at a time

PGE Skra Belchatow were runners-up last year but their form in domestic and European competition suggests they can go one better this time

Lausanne, Switzerland, December 13, 2010 – PGE Skra Belchatow will be hoping to carry their impressive run of form into the 2010 FIVB Men's Club World Championship as they arrive in Doha fresh from beating Germany's VfB Friedrichshafen for the second time in four days in the CEV Champions League on Sunday.

Jacek Nawrocki's side will go into the tournament off the back of 12 straight wins and high on confidence having guaranteed themselves a spot in the last 12 of the European competition. Bartosz Kurek, one of the stars of the Polish side, said: "The fact, we managed to beat the former winners of the Champions League for the second time in four days, is very important for us. It has built our confidence ahead of such a great event as the Club World Championship."

Kurek was a member of the team that fell just short of winning last year's tournament, losing the final to Italy's Trentino BetClic. The 22-year old, who was top scorer in Doha last time around, is eager to put that right this year. "It was an important event for me," he said of the 2009 event. “I remember it very well and I hope to repeat the success this year. The main point is to focus on our first match, against Paykan [of Iran on Thursday] and not to think about what a great run of results we have had. We are playing really well at the moment, we are confident, but we must not underestimate any team."

Belchatow have not dropped a point in over a month of domestic league action – not since their 3-2 win over Zaksa at the beginning of November. Top of the league, the defending Polish champions beat last year's runners-up and fellow CEV Champions League participants Jastrzebski Wegiel 3-1 in their most recent match.

"One of the most important things will be a high level of concentration," coach Nawrocki said. "I want my players to focus only on their next game, I want them to think only about the upcoming opponents. You must not make a mistake and expect a place in the semifinal for nothing. The only way to reach the summit is to have in your mind only the next step. The team who think about the final too early may very easily fall down.

"Our run of great results will surely influence our morale in Doha, the same as the score from Friedrichshafen, where we won 3-0," he added. "It was a very crucial match in the standings for Group D of the Champions League. We managed to win, and that is why we will feel much better ahead of the challenge that we expect in Qatar.

"I had an impression that last year's event was underestimated in Europe. It was unfair. Staying in Doha, facing the biggest stars in the world of Volleyball every day, we're participating in a great event. We consider last year's silver medal as one of the biggest of the club's successes. That is the reason we cannot wait for the 2010 edition. The coaches and the players begin their careers with the aim to get the chance to play in such a competition."
