 Press Release
Paul Mitchell relish test against 'best in world'

Nils Nielsen is part of the Paul Mitchell side that will travel to Doha. It is the first time a US men's club will compete at the FIVB Club World Championships.

Colorado, USA, December 3, 2010 – USA may not have a professional Volleyball league, but this has not stopped the country sending a team to the FIVB Men's Club World Championship for the first time, with US Open National Volleyball Championship side Paul Mitchell making the trip to Qatar for the 2010 tournament.

An unknown entity for many of their rivals, Paul Mitchell could be seen as tournament dark horses yet they have been a fixture on the American domestic scene for some time now, having won seven national titles since 2000. The fact the US Open is open to clubs from outside the United States has allowed the team to compete against opponents from Puerto Rico, Canada and other countries in the past.

"We were selected as the NORCECA representative for the FIVB Club World Championships based on our success at the US Open," said coach Gary Sato, who also serves as the assistant coach for the US national team.

Paul Mitchell are currently preparing at the American Sports Center in Anaheim, California ahead of the Doha event, which runs from December 15-21. "We've been working to get our offensive and defensive systems coordinated," Sato added. "We've also been improving our passing and setting rhythm. But all these great athletes are anxious to test their skills against some of the best club teams in the world."

Besides playing in the US Open, many members of the team have international experience. Leading the way is captain and setter Tyler Hildebrand, who has been on the US roster for the last two years and played a part in the 2010 FIVB World League earlier this year.

Additional experience comes in the form of Chris Seiffert, who served as back-up to USA setter Lloy Ball during the 2002-03 season, and also played professionally in Turkey. Outside hitters Casey Patterson and Nils Nielsen both played for Corozal, the Puerto Rican league champions, during the winter of 2009-10, while Damien Scott was MVP of the Puerto Rican league in 2008 when he played for Lares. Scott also had a spell with Finikas Syros in Greece in 2009-10 and has gained experience in Turkey and Kuwait too.
