Cimed begin South American campaign in style

Paraguay’s Deportivo Colon beat Nacional de Football de Montevideo of Uruguay to keep their semifinal hopes alive
San Juan, Argentina, October 29, 2010 – Brazilian club Cimed made a perfect start to their Men's South American Club Championship campaign in San Juan on Thursday as they beat Chile's Linares 3-0 (25-10, 25-21, 25-19) in the second match in Pool B, as qualification for the 2010 FIVB Men's Club World Champinship continues in Argentina.

The tournament is taking place in both Bolivar and San Juan and will conclude this Sunday. The winners will earn a ticket to the Club World Championship, scheduled to take place in Doha, Qatar from December 14-21. Last year Cimed represented the continent, finishing fifth.

With Thursday's win, Cimed clinched a semifinal spot but they will have to overcome hosts UPCN for top spot in the pool. In Pool A, in a match that had been postponed because of the death of former Argentine President Nestor Kirchner, Deportivo Colon beat Nacional de Football de Montevideo of Uruguay in straight sets (25-22, 25-15, 25-19) to secure their first victory in the competition.

The Paraguayan team, who were beaten by Argentina's Drean Bolivar 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-16) on the opening day, bounced back to clinch victory in what was a must-win game. Victor Gimenez's side now need Drean Bolivar to beat their Uruguayan rivals in order to qualify for the next round.
