Cuneo crowned champs as Trentino denied Serie A1 for second year

It is the second year in a row that Trentino have fallen at the final hurdle in the Serie A1
Rome, Italy, May 10, 2010 – FIVB Club World Champions Itas Diatec Trentino were denied the Serie A1 Italian title on Sunday for the second year in a row after suffering a 3-1 (14-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-20) defeat to Bre Banca Lannutti Cuneo in the final of the championship in Bologna.

A total of 8,426 fans turned out to watch the match which saw Trentino, who were crowned CEV Champions League winners on May 1, burst into the lead after claiming the first set, only to be undone by a determined and dogged Cuneo side.

“We arrived in good shape, determined and confident, and we managed to rescue the game despite a disappointing first set to bring home a major achievement,” Vladimir Nikolov, Cuneo player and captain of Bulgaria, said following the match.

“Our time has come,” Serbia international Nikola Grbic added. “The experienced players did not rush and we all played patiently and calmly.”

Trentino will travel to Doha, Qatar from December 14-21 to defend their FIVB Club World Championship title against Africa’s Al Ahly and sides from NORCECA, South America and Asia who are yet to be decided.
