Doha, Qatar, December 17, 2010 – PGE Skra Belchatow advanced to the semifinals of the 2010 FIVB Men's Club World Championship with a game to spare after beating local side Al Arabi Doha in straight sets (25-22, 25-22, 25-15).
Belchatow's victory leaves them top of Pool A with four points ahead of their final group game against Al Ahly on Sunday. Al Arabi are level on three points with second-placed Paykan, their last opponents in the section.
After their long and physically demanding five-set match against the Iranians of Paykan, Belchatow did not want a repeat and started the game highly focused, yet the host team did not fold easily. At the heart of their resistance was an outstanding contribution from the German Christian Pampel, who contributed an impressive 19 points.
However, the Poles displayed all their quality to continue their long winning streak – including games in the national league as well as the CEV Champions League – by taking control in the key moments of the game and going up a gear in the third and last set where the difference of class and physical power was striking. Michal Winiarski was their top scorer with 13 points while Jakub Novotny contributed 12.
Belchatow coach Jacek Nawrocki had the chance to use some of his reserve players in the third set and that playing time might prove valuable in the coming days as the competition reaches its denouement here in Doha.
