Evaluation of the Golden Formula in official seminar

Zenit Kazan captain Lloy Ball was one of the players who attended the Golden Formula seminar

Doha, Qatar, November 8, 2009 – The FIVB organized a seminar on Sunday to discuss the new rule of the “Golden Formula” that had been trialed for the first time during the FIVB 2009 Men’s Club World Championship hosted by Qatar at the Aspire Zone Indoor Hall in Doha.

The new rule requires that the first attack for each team after the opponent service begins from the back row in an attempt to produce longer rallies.

The meeting discussed the statistics made during the competition and the value of the new rule in the elongation of the rallies. The FIVB experts had their own opinion about the role of the Golden Formula in increasing the rate of the backline attacks but on the other hand decreasing the work of the middle blockers in the quick attacks. The discussion also put on table was the increased number of backline jumps for the attackers and opposites from the coaches’ side and the possibility of increasing the rate of injuries between those players. The setters described their new role in terms of the decreased number of combinations in the first rally then the return back to use all the tools starting from the following rallies.

The meeting was attended by all the Volleyball parties including the FIVB Control Committee of the competition led by the Control Committee President Shanrit Wongprasert, FIVB Sports Events Director Piero Rebaudengo. The meeting was also attended by experienced guests such as FIVB Board of Administration member Mr. Douglas Beal, Joop Alberda (1996 Olympic gold medalist coach of the Netherlands), Andrea Zorzi (former Italy international) and Renan Dal Zotto (Brazil).

Four coaches from eight participating teams were also invited with four players representing four different positions; the setter Lloy Ball (Zenit Kazan), the opposite Stephane Antiga (PGE Skra Belchatow), the middle blocker Emanuele Birarelli and the attacker Bruno Rezende (Cimed).

The FIVB invited also two members of the FIVB Referee Commission - Hassan Ahmed (Egypt) and Songsak Chareonpong (Thailand) - as well as three of the competition referees, Philippe Blain (France) President of the Coaching Commission and Mohamed Habib (Kuwait) and Laszlo Herpai (Hungary) from the FIVB Rules of the Games Commission.
