Zenit used all of their team spirit to qualify for the semifinals

Doha, Qatar, November 5, 2009 – Zenit Kazan of Russia and Paykan of Iran joined Trentino BetClic of Italy and PGE Skra Belchatow of Poland in the semi-finals of the FIVB 2009 Men’s Club World Championship after both teams collected their second victories on the third and last day of preliminary round action at the Aspire Zone Indoor Hall in Doha, Qatar on Thursday.

Zenit Kazan prevailed over Zamalek and Trentino BetClic swept Plataneros of Corozal in Pool A. PGE Skra Belchatow remained unbeaten in three games after beating Cimed to eliminate the Brazilian team while Paykan of Iran eased past Al Arabi of Qatar.

Pool A
Zenit Kazan bt  Zamalek 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-11)

Zenit Kazan of Russia used sharp service and a tight block to sweep Zamalek of Egypt in straight sets in Pool A. Zenit clinched the second ticket to the Pool A semi-finals in after Trentino BetClic of Italy had already secured the first ticket on Wednesday. It was nothing more than the tight block of the Russian team that made life difficult for Zamalek throughout the match. Zenit also upped the anot with a great service game, not giving the Zamalek defence not much of a chance at all. Clayton Stanely was top scorer with 19 points for Zenit while Saleh Youssef and Mohamed Badawy were Zamalek’s best scorers with only six points apiece.

Trentino BetClic bt Plataneros of Corozal 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-19)
Trentino BetClic of Italy maintained a clean sheet when they claimed their third victory in a row over Plataneros of Corozal (Puerto Rico) in straight sets 25-18, 25-13, 25-19. Matey Kaziyski was the top scorer in the match with 16 points while Victor Rivera and Ezequiel Cruz topped Corozal scorers with nine points each.

Pool B
Paykan Tehran bt Al Arabi 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-14)
Paykan of Iran secured the second semi-final ticket in Pool B with a straight sets victory over Al Arabi of Qatar 25-23, 25-19, 25-14.
Once again, Paykan could rely on their usual key players, setter Amir Hosseini and opposite Mohammad Kazaem who both topped scorer with 14 points. Ahmed Abdel Hay was Arabi’s best scorer with 13 points.

PGE Skra Belchatow bt Cimed 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-23)
PGE Skra Belchatow of Poland had to dig deep to clinch a 3-1 victory (22-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-23) over the highly rated Cimed of Brazil.  The Polish team topped Pool B with a win-loss ratio of 3-0, while Cimed dropped to 1-2 to finish third in the pool whilst missing out of a spot in the last four. The marvellous performance of Polish attacker Bartosz Kurek and opposite Stephane Antiga were the key factors behind Skra Belchatow’s tough victory.
