Trentino BetClic and Skra Belchatow secure semifinal tickets at FIVB 2009 Men’s Club World Championship

High fives all round for PGE Skra Belchatow after qualifying for the semi-finals

Doha, Qatar, November 4, 2009 - Trentino BetClic of Italy and PGE Skra Belchatow of Poland secured a semifinal spot on the second day of the FIVB 2009 Men’s Club World Championship at the Aspire Zone Indoor Hall in Doha, Qatar on Wednesday. 

Pool A
Trentino BetClic bt Zenit Kazan 3-2 (24-26, 25-23, 24-26, 25-19, 15-11)
Italy’s Trentino BetClic secured the first semifinal ticket in Pool A following their exciting victory over Zenit Kazan of Russia in the day’s longest match lasting two hours and 13 minutes. Trentino BetClic came from one set down to clinch the win, leaving Zenit Kazan and Zamalek of Egypt to compete for the second ticket in the group when they meet on Thursday. The Italian team was led by the Brazilian star Leandro Vissotto and the Bulgarian Matey Kaziyski who both top scored with 24 points each while Alexey Cheremisin was the top scorer for the Russian side with 22 points.

Zamalek bt Plataneros of Corozal 3-2 (23-25, 25-13, 23-25, 25-14, 21-19)
Pool A also featured another thrilling victory when Zamalek of Egypt pipped Plataneros of Corozal from Puerto Rico in an incredible five setter with the last set totaling an astonishing 40 points. Zamalek’s victory sets up an exciting clash between Zamalek and Zenit Kazan on Thursday to determine the second team from Pool A to qualify for the semis. Key factors leading to the victory were outstanding performances by Zamalek attacker Mohamed Badawy and setter Ashraf Aboulhassan. Badawy scored 31 points, making him top scorer of the match. Victor Rivera was best scorer for Corozal, notching up 30 points.   

Pool B
PGE Skra Belchatow bt Paykan Tehran 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-17)
Poland’s PGE Skra Belchatow claimed their second victory of the Championship, beating Paykan Tehran of Iran to top the group and secure the first semifinal ticket of the pool. Polish wing attacker Bartosz Kurek was a constant nuisance for the Iranian team defence with his unstoppable spikes both from the front and backlines. He topped the scorers with 17 points followed by Michal Bakiewicz’s 13 points. Mohammad Kazem led Paykan scorers with 16 points.

Cimed bt Al Arabi 3-1 (18-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-22)
Cimed of Brazil registered their first victory of the tournament with a come-from-behind-win over Al Arabi of Qatar, keeping alive their chances of obtaining the second semi-final ticket in the pool. Cimed’s lethal attacker Thiago Alves, was the super star not only with his 20 points scored in the match but also with his key plays at critical moments. The Egyptian star of Al Arabi, Ahmed Abdel Hay topped his team’s lost of scorers with 18 points.

The third and last day of pool competition on Thursday will feature four matches with Zamalek (Egypt) playing Zenit Kazan (Russia) and Trentino (Italy) taking on Corozal (Puerto Rico) in Pool A while Pool B will see Al Arabi (Qatar) play Paykan (Iran) and Belchatow (Poland) meet Cimed (Brazil)
