Cimed crowned kings of South America, book ticket to Doha

Cimed: First they took South America, now they want the world
Florianopolis, Brazil, October 11, 2009 — Brazil’s Cimed won the South American Club Championship on Sunday with a 3-2 (25-19, 15-25, 26-24, 19-25, 15-13) victory over Brasil Volei Clube.

With the win Cimed earned a spot at the elite FIVB Men’s World Club Championship in Doha, Qatar next month, where they will play the top teams from around the globe.

Sada Cruzeiro beat Vivo/Minas 3-1 to claim the bronze.

"We were closer to losing than winning at times,” said Cimed coach Marcos Pacheco. “Our opponents played very well and pushed us all the time. We didn’t make a bright start, but stayed calm and managed to get the result. We changed strategies during the game and we recovered. I'm very happy with this victory, which comes at my first major international competition.”

After winning the first set but losing the second, Cimed seemed helpless as Brasil Volei Clube took the ascendancy. But after taking a 19-22 lead in the third frame, the team from São Paulo shut down as Cimed found another gear, tying it at 22-22 before going on to win 16-24.

"We have a young team and our inexperience hurt us at times,” said Brasil Volei Clube coach Runibho. “We were without Serginho and Michael and we felt the absence of these players. The support of the crowd during the game also helped Cimed in the decisive moments.”

For Cimed captain Bruninho, it was heart and determination rather than pure talent that helped his side to the title.

"We did not play well technically,” Bruninho said. “We made many mistakes and we were struggling to set up our attacks. But our resilience and determination made the difference. And thanks also to our fans who encouraged us all the time.”

Three-time Superliga winners Cimed have already begun to focus on the challenges of the next competition to be held in Doha from November 3-8.

"We face very strong teams, with players from various teams around the world,” said setter Thiago Alves. “We will train over the next two weeks to try to represent Brazil in the best way possible."

Cimed will compete against seven other clubs in Doha: Trentino BetClic (Italy), Zenit Kazan (Russia), Corozal (Puerto Rico), Zamalek (Egypt), PGE Skra Belchatow (Poland), Payakan (Iran) and Al-Arabi (Qatar).

The Club World Championship was last played in 1992 and is making its long-awaited return after a 17-year hiatus.
