 Press Release
Bulgarian star continues to shine in the Alps

Bulgaria's Matey Kaziyski is all fired up for a long season ahead with Italy's Trentino BetClic
Lausanne, September 25, 2009 — Bulgaria’s Matey Kaziyski was the shining star in Trentino BetClic’s “All-Star” team that won the Italian League Serie A in 2008 and finished runner-up last season to Piacenza after one of the greatest finals ever, losing the deciding fifth match in a fifth-set tiebreaker, 15-13.

Having just returned from a grueling summer with the Bulgarian National Team, Kaziyski is back with his club (registered as Itas Diatec Trentino in Serie A) in the northern Italian city of Trento, ready to start what promises to be a very challenging season ahead, including an appearance at the FIVB Club World Championship in Doha, Qatar in November.

Kaziyski is enthusiastic when speaking about the elite men's international competition. “It’s a marvelous idea to hold an FIVB World Championship specifically for clubs,” he said. “I’m really keen to take part in it and I hope that this event will continue in the future, allowing all the best teams in the world to participate each year.

“We know very well teams like Russia’s Kazan and Poland’s Belchatow, and soon we’re going to find out more about the other clubs that will play in Doha. I confess that I have some doubts about the Golden Formula, because we’ve never played with this system. I’m not sure that it’s going to help the Volleyball show, but we need to test it first.”

The Golden Formula, to be trialed for the first time at an FIVB tournament in Doha, requires that the first attack for each team begins from the back row in an attempt to produce longer rallies.

In addition to the showcase international tournament in Novemeber, Kaziyski and his teammates will also take part in the long Italian League season, which includes the Italian Cup, and the Indesit Champions League organized by the CEV.

“I’m just back in Trento after a very tough summer with my National Team” said Kaziyski, who helped Bulgaria to a bronze medal in this year’s European Championship and a 10th-place finish in the 2009 FIVB World League. “But I still have the same fighting spirit of the last two seasons. Our team, which will participate in the Italian League and the Club World Championship, has changed a lot compared with last year.

“It will take time to know if this team is stronger than the previous one. Anyway, we have a very good feeling with the new players, we just need to work harder and harder every day,” Kaziyski added.

Coached by Bulgarian Radostin Stoytchev, Itas Diatec Trentino aims to be a force to be reckoned with at the FIVB Club World Championship, feeling all the necessary pressure coming from Italy’s past achievements at the tournament. Italian clubs won the tournament, back on the Volleyball calendar this year after a 17-year hiatus, every year from 1989 to 1992.

“If we are lucky enough to avoid injures we will try to win all the competitions we participate in,” Kaziyski said. “I can’t say which competition is my favorite among the Club World Championship, Italian League, Italian Cup or Champions League, but we can be competitive against any opponent. The season will be long and very demanding, but Trento has a large roster and we can be optimistic.”
