 Press Release
Payakan qualifies for FIVB Men's Club World Championship

Iranian club Payakan plays against Saudi team Al-Hilal

Dubai, UAE, June 24, 2009 - Payakan of Iran successfully defended their title at the Asian Men's Club Volleyball Championship after beating Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia in straight sets in the finals here on Wednesday to qualify for the World Men's Club Volleyball Championship to be held in Qatar this November.

Meanwhile, Al-Arabi of Qatar defeated hosts Al-Nasr of United Arab Emirates 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-15) to take the bronze medal.

On the last day of the 2009 Asian Men's Club Championship, Payakan, who kept an unbeaten record at the tournament, met rivals Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia.

The Saudi team, who lost to Iran in the preliminary round, started the game perfectly, grabbing a 6-1 lead. But Payakan gradually resumed their form and controlled the game. After rallying strongly to even the score at 16 all, they then went on take the lead and the set, 25-20.

In the second set, Iran was steadily on their way, leading big at 10-3, 12-5 and 16-10 with good services, tight defense, clever drops and powerful spiking. Payakan concluded the second set 25-22.

The third set was more exciting as Al-Hilal did not want to give up easily. The gap in score was not as big as in the second set. The Iranian led at the first technical timeout 8-7. A great save by Iran's libero and strong attacking increased the gap to 16-12, and then to 23-18 and 25-19 as Iran defended their title.

In the bronze medal match, Al-Arabi of Qatar played much better than hosts Al-Nasr. The visitor's attacks were effective and their blocks were like a great wall that made it very difficult for their rivals to break through. The hosts, despite being supported by a partisan crowd, could not get organized enough to put up a challenge.

In the playoff for 5th to 8th, Suntory Sunbirds of Japan brushed aside Royal Thai of Thailand 25-18, 25-17 25-19 to place fift. Qadsia of Kuwait downed Darkulab of Bahrain in straight sets (29-27, 25-18, 32-30) to finish 7th.

Almaty of Kazakhstan finished a poor 9th after beating Samator of Indonesia 3-0 (25-17,25-17,25-21), while Agmk of Uzbekistan defeated Baouchrieh of Lebanon 25-21, 25-23, 25-23.
