“The Russian block and service killed us,” says Corozal coach

Zenit Kazan (RUS) coach, Vladimir Alekno
“It was important to win the first match and we did. It didn’t really matter about changing the strategies. We managed to stick to our basics and apply the new Golden Formula. It will take some more time to fully adapt to the VGF, but we hope to display a good performance and produce positive results in the remaining matches as well.

"I prefer to play in the Champions League format, but the Club Championship is a prestigious event and it is very important to play in such events.”

Captain, Lloy Ball
“Of course, I am happy to win. We did well to restrict the powerful Puerto Rico team and were lucky to win against a tough side.

"Our strength was in the serves and blocking and we did well to begin the Championship on a winning note.”

Plataneros de Corozal (PUR) coach, David Aleman
“It doesn’t really have to do much with the side we fielded in the match today, whether they were professionals or semi-professionals has nothing to do with our match. Zenit Kazan were no doubt a better side and are one of the best teams in the world at serving, this being how they dominated the match. Scoring 2-3 points in a row put the match wide open and they capitalized on those areas.”

Captain, Fernando Morales
“We did well in the match. However, Zenit Kazan dominated with their accurate serves and solid blocking. We couldn’t do anything against high blocking and their serves.

"All teams participating in the championships are playing under the same Golden Formula rule, so it’s not right to say that we didn’t perform because of this rule. Our opponents played good volleyball, and they won.”
