PGE Skra Belchatow secures semis ticket with victory over Paykan

Michal Bakiewicz receives well for PGE Skra Belchatow
Doha, Qatar, November 4, 2009 - PGE Skra Belchatow of Poland secured the first semifinal ticket in Pool B and the second of the FIVB 2009 Men’s Club World Championship following their second victory of the tournament after beating Paykan of Iran in straight sets 25-22, 25-18, 25-17 on the second day here at the Aspire Zone Indoor Hall in Doha, Qatar on Wednesday. Belchatow improved their win-loss ratio to 2-0 to equal that of Trentino BetClic that qualified for the semi-finals earlier from Pool A, while Paykan dropped to 1-1.

Polish wing attacker Bartosz Kurek was a constant nuisance for the Iranian team defence with his unstoppable spikes both from the front and backlines as he topped the scorers with 17 points followed by Michal Bakiewicz with 13 points. Mohammad Kazem topped Paykan’s scorers with 16 points.

The more experienced Polish side started the match with more discipline than their opponents, determined to use their wing attacks, out of reach of the Paykan block, with Bartosz Kurek and the strong opposite Stephane Antiga particularly effective as Belchatow led throughout the first set to win 25-22.

The second set featured an improved performance from Paykan as middle blockers Mohammad Mousavi and Hesam Bakhsheshi adjusted their game and successfully countered the Polish offence. Better use of the backline, with Mohammad Kazem in position 2 particularly effective, saw Paykan lead narrowly at 8-7 before Belchatow reorganised their offence through Kurek and Antiga to regain the lead at 16-14 at the second Technical Timeout before wrapping up the set with Michal Bakiewicz in awesome form on attack.

The Iranian players were determined to claim some honours in the third set with Kazem leading from the front on attack but Belchatow kept the pressure on before easily wrapping up the match 25-17 in the third.
