Doha, Qatar, November 5, 2009 - PGE Skra Belchatow of Poland had to dig deep to clinch a 3-1 victory (22-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-23) over the highly performed Cimed of Brazil in the third and last day of preliminary action in Pool B of the 2009 Men’s Club World Championship at Aspire Zone Indoor Hall in Doha, Qatar on Thursday. The Polish team topped Pool B with a win-loss ratio of 3-0, while Cimed dropped to 1-2 to finish third of the pool and whilst missing out of a spot in the last four.
The marvellous performance of the Polish attacker Bartosz Kurek and the opposite Stephane Antiga was the key factor of the difficult victory. Kurek scored impressive 33 points that put him far ahead of scorers. The Cimed blocker Lucas Saatkamp topped his team scorers and scored 14 points including 5 block savings.
Cimed players played their best in the competition till now in the first set, they applied the Golden Formula efficiently through their attacker Thiago Alves. They prepared well their block through Lucas Saatkamp who succeeded to make a great barrier against the Polish team attacks. Although Belchatow recovered in the last part of the set through improving their block and defense, they couldn’t catch the set that was settled by Cimed 25-22.
Belchatow appeared with a completely different performance in the second set with their opposite Stephane Antiga playing a great role in spiking from both the front and backlines. Cimed replaced their opposite Robson Fazio by Leandro Teixeira for a while to return back to the net action but the Polish team reacted positively through the block of Plinski and Michal Bakiewicz who succeeded to stop this. Belchatow attackers reached their peak specially Bartosz Kurek who scored the critical points that gave his team the set 25-18.
Belchatow continued the same rhythm in the fourth set as Antiga channeled his sharp hits from position 2 aided by the skilful setting of Miguel Falasca and they were ahead 8-4 at the FTT. Fazio and Saatkamp returned back with their hits that disturbed the Polish team for a while and they succeeded to decrease the point deficit to two points 16-14. Bartosz deceived the Brazilian block by his tactical spikes and brought his team again until Cimed entered the match with there good defense but again Belchatow finished the situation to their side 25-21.
The fourth set started very exciting as the score went here and there as the Polish attacker Kurek did his best and was a landmark in his teams attacks but quickly Cimed succeeded to draw with the great efforts of their lockers led by Saatkamp and also through the skillful placing of Alves. Cimed fought to the last breath and succeeded to draw many times till Belchatow won the critical points that gave them the victory of the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.
