Godinez hails Costa Rican improvements

Costa Rica's Catalina Fernandez in the Mixed Zone

Tokyo, Japan, October 30, 2010 - Costa Rica vs Algeria press conference

Costa Rica player Karen Cope: “I think it was a hard match. Algeria was serving hard at us. I think we, in general, did a good job. Blocking was good, and our digging got better, and I think that’s what helped us win the match.”

Costa Rica coach Braulio Godinez: “I also have to congratulate the Algerian team. They fought hard, and we knew prior to match that this would be difficult as we are both perhaps at same level in the world rankings. In the second set we fought hard, point to point, but in the third set our players were calm, probably from their experience in world class tournaments. Our blocking was effective and our reception was far better than yesterday.”

Algeria player Fatima Zahra Oukazi: “We were disappointed after the last match yesterday. We lost some confidence, but we have to build back up our confidence and gain some momentum to try to win the next matches.”

Algeria coach Ikhedji Mouloud: “First I’d like to congratulate the Costa Rican team on their victory today. They delivered effective serving and our reception was not good enough and their spikers made fewer errors than us and their blocking was quite good. In the first and second we fought very hard, but in the third set perhaps our players lost their confidence, and on this World Championship level, we can’t lose confidence. Our rankings are similar, but individual player experience in world class tournaments… there are some differences as far as experience goes.”
