Sada Cruzeiro first to secure berth in semifinals

Sada Cruzeiro of Brazil gave their fans a lot to enjoy with their scintillant performance of Wednesday against Sportif Sfaxien of Tunisia

Betim, Brazil, October 16, 2013 – Brazil’s Sada Cruzeiro beat Sportif Saxfien of Tunisia (25-16, 25-17, 25-15) to clinch a spot in the semifinals of the FIVB Men’s Club World Championship with a win-loss record of 2-0 in Pool B.

It was a splendid show of volleyball displayed by the local team with almost perfect execution throughout the match against a hapless Sfaxien team that was completely dominated.

Yoandy Leal and Wallace Souza each scored 11 points to spearhead the neat balanced offence of the winning side.

“I am very happy with the qualification to the semifinal round,” Sada Cruzeiro’s coach Marcelo Méndez expressed. “The team is improving but we still need to have better services against the stronger teams like the Russian and the Italian.”

In the two other matches of Day Two, Panasonic Panthers of Japan evened their record at 1-1 with a strong victory over Iran’s Kal-Kalleh in Pool A by scores of 25-29, 24-26, 30-28, 25-16, while Lokomotiv Novosibirsk scored a 25-20, 25-23, 25-17 win over Deportivo La Romana in their first outing in Pool B.

Kunihiro Shimizu enjoyed a superb game with 27 points, including three aces and three blocks, to lead the victory of the Japanese club, while Brazilian Dante Amaral contributed 16 points.

“Even though they (Kal Kalleh) say they don’t have the experience I am quite impressed with their ability and their physical skills,” Panasonic’s coach Masashi Numbo stated. “We are very happy with the victory and taking the tournament as a learning experience.”

Pavel Moroz and Lukas Divis topped the scoring of Lokomotiv with 13 points apiece, followed by Oreol Camejo who finished with 12.

“In this game the important thing is not who attacks harder but who makes fewer mistakes,” Lokomotiv’s captain Alexander Butko commented afterwards.

The coach Andrey Voronkov added: “Our team was short of energy and we need to play more concentrated.”
