European teams finish on top of their pools at 2013 FIVB Women’s Club World Champs

Jovana Brakocevic (20 points) and captain Gözde Kirdar Sonsirma (19) led Vakifbank to a well-deserved 3:1 win over Brazil's Unilever Volei.

Zurich, Switzerland, October 11, 2013 – Host Volero Zurich and European champions Vakifbank Istanbul top their pools after the Preliminary Round of the 2013 FIVB Women’s Club World Championship in Zurich, Switzerland. The hosts made short work of African champions Kenya Prisons (25-17, 25-13, 25-6) while Vakifbank Istanbul overpowered Brazil’s Unilever Volei 3:1 (25-20, 25-18, 21-25, 25-18).

Saturday’s semi-finals feature Vakifbank Istanbul taking on Guangdong Evergrande (15.00 local time) and Unilever Volei challenging host Volero Zurich (18.00).

European champions Vakifbank Istanbul clinched the first place in Pool B in the 2013 FIVB Women’s Club World Championship after a well-deserved 3:1 (25-20, 25-18, 21-25, 25-18) win over Brazil’s Unilever Volei. With 19 block winners and a strong offense, the squad of coach Giovanni Guidetti eventually proved too strong for the South Americans.

Jovana Brakocevic led Istanbul with 20 points while captain Kirdar Sonsirma Gözde contributed 19 kills for her side. Carol was the top scorer for Unilever Volei with 12 points. Istanbul had 19 (!) blocking points to Brazil’s 8, while both teams had 6 service aces.

Vakifbank Istanbul coach Giovanni Guidetti:”We still have room for improvement. However, my team deserved tonight’s victory. My players showed great fighting spirit. Individually, it was not a perfect game. Our passers did not play at their highest level. Nevertheless, in the crucial phase of the match we were present with solid play. Time is short for recovery but I am sure we will be ready for Saturday’s semi-final against Guangdong Evergrande.”

Vakifbank Istanbul captain Gözde Kirdar Sonsirma: “In the first two sets, we played excellent volleyball. Then we felt a little bit tired but showed a strong reaction in the fourth set. It was very important for us to win tonight. We will try to recover as fast as possible to be ready for Saturday’s semi-final versus a very strong Chinese team.”

In Friday’s first match, host Volero Zurich booked their second win at 2013 FIVB Women’s Club World Championship by defeating Kenya Prisons in straight sets (25-17, 25-13, 25-6). The Africans are eliminated. Zurich, winner of Pool A, move to Saturday’s semi-finals.

Kenia Carcaces helped her side with 13 points. Olesia Rykhliuk added 9 winners for Volero. Everlyne Makuto was the best scorer for Kenya Prisons with 8 kills. Volero had the edge in blocking kills (5-3) and service points (5-3) and committed less errors (9-26).

Volero Zurich captain Nneka Onyejekwe: “It was important to stay focused today. Yesterday, we played a hard match against China and finished late. We felt a little bit tired, but saved some energy with a quick win today. That is the most important point.”

Volero Zurich coach Jan de Brandt: “Fore sure we are happy. We finished on top of our pool. Today, my players played concentrated. We controlled the match from the beginning to the end and economized some power for Saturday’s semi-finals.”

The competition continue on Saturday with the much-awaited semi-finals. Vakifbank Istanbul take on Guangdong Evergrande (15.00 local time) before Unilever Volei challenge host Volero Zurich (18.00).
